Grants for a Small Business: Small Business Grants For Women

If you have come up with a new idea or just want to finally start that business of your own, finding the capital you need to get started may be the thing getting in your way. It is no secret that many new business ventures fail because of insufficient starting capital. Well, you will be pleased to know that there is help available for startup businesses. In order to support the development of new business, the government and various organizations offer grants to new or expanding businesses. While this may sound very generous, it only makes sense since it is in the best interest of the country, and other businesses as well, to encourage new enterprises by investing new venture capital; thus giving life to the dreams of entrepreneurs and continuing to promote advancement in business and technology.

However, there is a misconception about federal government grants for business. US government agencies do not give grant money directly to businesses and individuals for startup. That being said, the government does routinely give out grant money?to states and local communities. The state and community projects, funded by the federal grant funds, can mean money to your business, in the way of contracts and sub-contracts.

The government knows that the most affordable way to create more jobs is to create a climate where small businesses can access money to grow and thrive. If you are a woman owned company, then you are in luck. Many state, and local governments all have programs available that provide small business grants for women who own either part or the whole of their business.

Provide financial history: You have to be able to provide a list of all other grants you have received in the past, if there are any. It is more likely for you to be approved if it is your first time. You also have to be able to provide your financial records, whether you are employed or not and your primary source of income. Most institutions prefer to give grants to those who don?t have other sources of income, as they prioritize those who really need financial support to open up a business.

Your chances of getting a business grant is higher if you would be able to provide recommendations either from your community, past clients or past employers. This is to ensure that you are capable of running a business and that you don?t have any past records of fraudulent activities. Small business grants for women can be used together with a business loan, should you need to. It is easier to get a grant than a loan, as they don?t necessarily check your credit record or require you to have a steady source of income. To find out more click Grants for a Small Business .

Mark Hunt takes out Cheick Kongo in the first round at UFC 144

Mark Hunt made his name in combat sports in Japan, as he was a well-known and credentialed kickboxer. He thanked the Japanese fans with a quick knockout of Cheick Kongo at UFC 144.

The two tentatively felt each other out, but when Kongo came inside, Hunt met him with a huge left that sent Kongo flying. Kongo returned to his feet, then Hunt threw a right-left combo that wobbled his opponent. He followed it with uppercuts until Kongo's legs fell out from underneath him. The bout was stopped at 2:11 in the first round.

At 37 years old, Hunt now has three straight wins in the UFC and an overall record of 8-7. For Kongo, this loss stops him from getting a three-fight win streak.

Deadly Duo: Mixing Alcohol and Prescription Drugs Can Result in Addiction or Accidental Death

News | Health

Alcohol and Xanax, both found in Whitney Houston's hotel room right after she died, inhibit the central nervous system and depend on the same enzyme for bodily clearance

Image: ? iStockphoto/orcearoorcearo

The mystery of Whitney Houston's death will not be solved for several weeks, as the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office awaits a full toxicology report. But many experts speculate that the singer's tragic demise involved a deadly cocktail of alcohol and prescription drugs, including Xanax.

Houston wouldn't be the first star to suffer such a fate: Heath Ledger, Michael Jackson and Anna Nicole Smith are all thought to have died in part from prescription drug overdoses, which can involve painkillers, sedatives and stimulants, often in combination with alcohol. But the problem extends far beyond Hollywood. In 2007 some 27,000 Americans died from unintentional prescription drug overdoses?making prescription drugs a more common cause of accidental death in many states than car crashes are.

A slippery slope
Although sedatives are thought to have played a role in Houston?s death, most prescription drug overuse involves opioid painkillers. Approximately 3 to 5 percent of people who take pain medication eventually end up addicted, according to Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, an arm of the U.S. National Institutes of Health. And "individuals who have a past history of a substance-use disorder?from smoking, drinking or other drugs?are at greater risk," she says. Addiction to other classes of prescription drugs such as sedatives, stimulants and sleep medications is thought to be less common?but it occurs, and even users who do not become compulsively addicted can, over time, become physically dependent and experience intense withdrawal symptoms when their prescriptions run out. They might also develop drug tolerance, the need to take higher doses over time to feel the same effects.

Other people start taking prescription drugs just to get high, perhaps in part because they have the (false) notion that prescription drugs are safer to experiment with than are illicit drugs. "They take them for recreational purposes, and then a portion of them find 'Wow, I can't stop using this,'" says Jon Morgenstern, director of addiction treatment at the Columbia University Medical Center.

It is unclear how Houston developed her substance problems, but like many other addicts, she eventually began mixing drugs along with alcohol. Many prescription drug users who are not addicted or dependent consume alcohol concurrently as well, despite medical advice against it. According to a 2008 study published by researchers at Brown University and the University of Rhode Island, 60 percent of people who regularly take prescription drugs known to interact with alcohol also drink, and 5 percent have at least three drinks in a row when they do.

Prescription drugs and alcohol can be a dangerous combination, Volkow says. Painkillers and booze are perhaps the worst to mix, because both slow breathing by different mechanisms and inhibit the coughing reflex, creating "a double-whammy effect," she says, that can stop breathing altogether. Alcohol also interacts with anti-anxiety drugs (including Xanax), antipsychotics, antidepressants, sleep medications and muscle relaxants?intensifying the drugs' sedative effects, causing drowsiness and dizziness, and making falls and accidents more likely. A 2010 study published in the Canadian Journal of Public Health reported that automobile drivers were much more likely to weave and speed if they were under the influence of drugs like Xanax in addition to alcohol than if they had consumed alcohol alone. And according to a 2011 study published in the AmericanJournal of Therapeutics, people who visited an emergency room after taking too much of the sleeping drug Ambien were more than twice as likely to end up in an intensive care unit if they had also consumed alcohol, compared with Ambien-takers who had not had anything to drink.

History of Workers Compensation ? Worker Compensation Insurance

Workers compensation provides payment to workers who are injured on the job. To break that down, it is a type of insurance that protects against the risk of an on-the-job injury making the worker unable to continue working and gain an income. Employers are taxed in order to create a guaranteed fund of money that worker?s compensation benefits can be paid from. This ensures that there are always benefits available to qualifying individuals.

Workers Compensation from the Beginning

Employee benefit systems similar to worker?s compensation have been found in ancient Rome, Greece and China where there were pre-determined payment schedules for workers who lost various body parts during the course of their labor. Throughout history, systems like this have existed but they did not exactly mirror the type of worker?s compensation benefits employers now must offer.

Most historians place the origins of modern worker?s compensation in Germany in the mid-1800?s. During the height of the industrial revolution, Germany?s government passed legislation that would protect railroad workers in the event of an on-the-job accident or injury. They were following the example of German worker guilds which provided certain benefits (including a disability payment benefit) to the guild members. As a socialist country, Germany was very concerned about offering social insurance programs and this model of worker?s compensation fit nicely.

In the 1880?s Workers? Accident Insurance, a compulsory plan to provide for workers outside the railroad system who had had an accident on the job, was introduced. This was the first universal and formalized worker?s compensation plan.

Workers Compensation Progress through the Years

Workers? Accident Insurance spread through Europe during the late 1800?s, though it was often called Workmen?s Accident Insurance, and by the 1890?s it had replaced England?s court run Employer?s Liability Act.

By the turn of the century, America had its own workers compensation plan in place with Maryland as the first state to adopt it. Unfortunately, the early plans in America placed a great burden on the injured employee. Instead of just showing the injury and receiving a benefit, the employee had to provide proof that he or she had been injured as a result of employer negligence. Then, after obtaining some sort of proof, the employee had to sue the company in order to be awarded benefits. While this protection was better than no protection, proving their case was difficult and many workers went through the time and expense of a court proceeding without ever receiving a benefit. By 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt stepped in and pointed out the one-sidedness of the present system.

Soon after, in 1911 to be exact, the state of Wisconsin adopted a new workers compensation law that allowed for a tradeoff between injured employee and responsible employer. Rather than forcing the employee to find the proof of the employer negligence and sue, the employer would automatically provide medical care and replacement wages to injured employees. But here is where the tradeoff came in; as a result of the benefits, the employee had to agree not to sue the employer for further damages. While we might credit President Roosevelt with this abrupt change of pace, the reality is more likely that the workers who were able to prove negligence under the old law and sue their employers were taking in more money for damages through lawsuits than employers might have to pay when taking care of the wages and medical expenses of every claimant. In addition, even the lawsuits the employers won had a price since they still had to take the time to defend themselves and had to bear the expense of legal counsel.

The one state that held out of the new form of worker?s compensation legislation was Florida. At that time, Florida had a very small population and no manufacturing jobs. But when Florida politicians decided to try and attract new residents and businesses to the state in 1935, they were forced to adopt the new worker?s compensation model.

Information About Female Hair Loss Causes | New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Female hair loss causes can vary from person to person. But some studies are showing that not all hair loss is a bad thing. The reasoning behind this is because they hair has a natural cycle that it goes through overtime. It has a growing phase which lasts approximately three years. Also it has a replacement phase which would explain the shedding. So when this is taking place the woman has nothing to worry about because it is perfectly natural and normal.

It becomes un normal when it is a lot of hair that is being loss. This can be caused by a lot of things. A woman may experience hair loss if she has had a surgery recently. In most cases when it is lost because of illness it only lasts temporarily.

Changes in the hormones can also be a reason for it to be loss. If a woman has thyroid problems then this may be the reason for her experiencing the loss. However, this problem can be fixed easily by just balancing out the hormones.

Pregnancy is another reason behind the problem. This is because while a woman is pregnant none of the hair will be loss. Hormones are the reason behind this. However, after the baby is delivered the cycle will start and it will seem like a lot of hair is being shed but it actually is just all of the dead strains that have been in the head for the whole nine months.

Some of the medications that women take also can have the problem as one of the side effects of the drug. So it is best to read the labels on the medications to avoid unnecessary stress. Birth control pills are known for causes this problem. However, once the medications are finished usually everything returns back to normal.

Sometimes, however, the cause behind the problem can be because of an infection or another medical condition. Luckily, if it is a medical condition behind the problem it probably means that the condition is just beginning. This is good news because the treatment process for that can also begin. So it is advised to make sure to see a physician if it seems like it may be more of a symptom of something then a problem.

A lot of women do not like to believe that some hairdos lead to this problem. However, they do especially corn rolls and ponytails. This is because they cause pulling on the scalp. But, if the pulling is stopped in time the problem will be gone once the phases start back up again.

There have been very few cases where the problem has resulted in baldness. However, as with any other problems you may be experiencing, it is recommended to schedule a visit with a doctor to discuss what is going on. This helps to ensure that no detrimental problems will occur from any of the female hair loss causes.

Megaupload co-founder granted bail, New Zealand judge rules he's not a flight risk

After being denied twice, Megupload co-founder Kim Dotcom has been granted bail by a New Zealand judge, who ruled he isn't in fact a flight risk. To date, the court's rationale for keeping Dotcom behind bars has been that he might flee to his native Germany in a bid to avoid extradition to the US, where he stands accused of generating more than $175 million in criminal proceeds through the exchange of copyrighted material. And though prosecutors had previously argued that Dotcom has multiple passports and bank accounts and a "history of fleeing criminal charges," district court Judge N.R. Dawson concluded the risk of him taking off has been overstated. In particular, he noted, Dotcom has a wife, three children and another on the way, and that "the US government has not shown since [his] arrest that he has access to any money." Though he's returning home, so to speak, he's not permitted to enter the mansion where he's been living before his arrest (he'll instead stay in a small house nearby, according to Reuters). While there, he must wear an electronic tracking device on his ankle, and access to the internet (and helicopters!) is forbidden. And that, readers, is where he shall remain -- at least until the extradition hearing begins, likely sometime this summer.

Buildings and Grounds wins Big Cypress Employee Fun Day ...

By Naji Tobias

BIG CYPRESS ? Down, set, hike!

Seven Tribal department teams faced off in a flag football tournament for the right to claim Toilet Bowl honors during Big Cypress? Employee Fun Day inside the Big Cypress Rodeo Arena on Jan. 27.

?Councilman Tiger wanted to have this event to boost the morale of all the employees we have here in Big Cypress,? said Council?s Office Coordinator Marlin Miller, who served lunch for the employees with the help of Tribal Council representative assistants Noella Dyan O?Donnell and Wovoka Tommie. ?We wanted to do something for the employees and let them know we appreciate them for all the work they do for us.?

In what was an exciting finish to the Big Cypress Council-sponsored initiative, Buildings and Grounds squeaked by Recreation/Rodeo in an overtime thriller to take home the Toilet Bowl trophy with a final score of 14-7. Buildings and Grounds? final record was 4-0, while Recreation/Rodeo?s final record was 4-2.

After two five-minute halves, both teams went into overtime. Buildings and Grounds used seven plays to march its way to the end zone, thanks to a perfect 15-yard touchdown pass from Joel Cavazos to Victor Becerra that proved to be the tournament clincher.

?It felt great to step up for my team,? said Becerra, who was named the Toilet Bowl MVP. ?I threw a pick early in the game that caused a touchdown, so I needed to redeem myself there. We just threw it up and I just got open to be in position for the catch.?

The final game between Buildings and Grounds and Recreation/Rodeo seemed to be poised for a rubber match early on, as Becerra threw an interception right into the hands of Recreation?s Frank Moody in the first half. Becerra was one to watch, having made four touchdown catches and two defensive interceptions.

Buildings and Grounds faced a 7-0 halftime deficit because of Becerra?s thrown interception, but they found their way back into the game after Guillermo Rodriguez caught a touchdown pass from Cavazos. Cavazos? talent shined in the eight touchdown passes he made in the four games he played.

At 7-7, all Recreation/Rodeo needed to do was throw for another score to be one win away from the title. Unfortunately for Recreation/Rodeo, Dustin Lowman threw a pick to Rodriguez close to the end of regulation, with his team having to play defense the rest of the way. Lowman was a force to be reckoned with, having made 16 touchdown passes in the six games he played.

Big Cypress Tribal senior Mitchell Cypress, who did not play in the tournament, said he liked what he saw at the Rodeo Arena.

?I?m a little bit too over-the-hill, so I just wanted to watch the youngsters play the game,? Cypress said. ?It was fun to see them all having a good time out there.?

Council, who sponsored the event, ended with a 2-2 final record. Council?s team was led by the Tribal trio of Cicero ?Tebow? Osceola, who threw five touchdown passes; Charlie Cypress, who made four touchdown catches; and Big Cypress Tribal Council Rep. Mondo Tiger, who threw two touchdown passes.

The tournament?s remaining teams were: defending Toilet Bowl champions Utilities, who ended with a 1-2 final record; Housing , with a 1-2 final record; Museum/Tribal Historic Preservation Office, with a 0-2 final record; and Community Care for the Elderly, with a 0-2 final record.

Phillips Launching New Dual-view Gaming TVs During 2012 ...

Phillips has announced that during the second quarter of 2012 it will be rolling out new ranges of HDTVs that will be equipped with a dual-view mode, perfect for multiplayer gaming on the same screen.

The new dual-view technology that we have featured here on Geeky Gadgets previously, enables two gamers to play on the same full screen, but see different views. In a similar way you can dual-view game on Sony?s 3D display.

Phillips Dual-View

The new dual-view or SimulView technology allows one gamers to wear a pair 3D of glasses to see one image, while a second pair of glasses is worn by the other gamers, who sees a second image on the same screen. The technology works by splitting the 3D signal, which is originally two images left and right, and shows only what the left eye would normally see to one set of glasses and the other to the right set.

The new HDTVs that will be equipped with the new dual-view technology are the Philips 6000 and 7000 series references : PFL6007 and PFL7007 and will range from 32-inches to 55-inches.

Currently Sony?s PS3 3D display dual-view technology only works with compatible equipped with support for the feature. So it will be interesting to see if Philips? new line if HDTVs will support all video games straight out of the box. Unfortunately no information on pricing or specific worldwide availability has been released as yet.

Romney struggling to attract white working class (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Republican Mitt Romney is faltering with white working-class voters crucial to his party's drive to capture the White House, even as he tries to fend off a rising GOP challenger, Rick Santorum, who wields strong blue-collar appeal.

The wealthy former Bain Capital chief has led his rivals by comfortable margins among white college graduates, according to combined polls of voters in the first five states that held presidential nominating contests. But the exit and entry surveys showed only a modest Romney advantage among whites who lack college degrees, the yardstick analysts typically use to define the working class.

The imbalance was most pronounced among less-educated white men, with whom his lead disappeared.

More recent polling bears out the same problem for Romney. According to a national poll of Republicans released this week by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center, the former Massachusetts governor has a slender lead over Santorum among whites with degrees but trails him among working-class whites, 36 percent to 23 percent.

Romney's lukewarm performance with less-educated whites could haunt him in the Feb. 28 Michigan primary. Though it's Romney's native state, Santorum is using his upbringing in the western Pennsylvania manufacturing town of Butler, his rougher-edged style and his "Made in America" proposals for boosting U.S. manufacturing to woo Michigan's many blue-collar voters.

Romney's weakness with working-class whites is a liability he would also have to address as the nominee. GOP presidential candidates often need big margins from this group to offset weaker support from others.

"It has to be a concern," said GOP pollster John McLaughlin, who is not working for a presidential candidate. "What these voters are looking for is, `Tell me how you're going to help my life.' If we can't articulate that, then we're going to lose."

Some voters view Romney as "an ultra-wealthy individual," said David Hill, another GOP pollster who is not working in the presidential race. "They have a sense he cannot identify with ordinary Americans. He'll have ample time over the course of campaigning in the general election to rectify that."

The sometimes-staid Romney is already trying to do just that.

He recently described his father as a carpenter who could spit nails out of his mouth "pointy end forward," without mentioning that George Romney became CEO of the American Motors Corp. and governor of Michigan. He also described how rising fuel and food prices have been "tough for middle-income families in America," and said the country needs a president with "experience in a factory or experience in a workplace" who can understand how to create jobs.

Santorum, son and grandson of Italian immigrants, has a more personal connection to working-class voters that he's always ready to discuss. He cites his childhood living in apartments provided by the Veterans Administration, where his father worked as a psychologist, and never misses an opportunity to discuss his grandfather.

"My grandfather was a coal miner. I grew up in a steel town, with blue-collar roots," the now well-off former Pennsylvania senator said Tuesday in Boise, Idaho.

Strategists and political scientists attribute Romney's problem partly to his personal wealth and financier background and a string of statements his opponents have used to characterize him as an out-of-touch patrician. He has jokingly called himself unemployed, said he knows what it is like to fear a pink slip and characterized his $373,000 earnings from paid speeches as "not very much" money.

Romney has also been hurt by his tax returns. They show he pays around 15 percent of his income in taxes ? less than many middle-income families ? and has placed some assets in Swiss bank accounts and other exotic locations like the Cayman Islands.

"There's no identification, no connection that he makes with some of these voters," said Terry Madonna, a political scientist and pollster at Franklin & Marshall College.

Romney pollster Neil Newhouse says his candidate's early showing with the working class has been "a soft spot" because Santorum and Gingrich have targeted those same voters. That won't translate to Election Day, Newhouse said.

"The general election will be about President Obama and his accomplishments and lack thereof," Newhouse said.

Combined figures for the first five states to vote ? Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Florida and Nevada ? show ideology was also a factor. Just 22 percent of Romney's votes came from working-class whites who consider themselves very conservative. Santorum got 52 percent of his votes from that group and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Romney's biggest rival at the time, got 45 percent.

In those early contests, Romney led Gingrich by 43 percent to 28 percent among whites who completed college, the polls show.

That gap shrank to a 39 percent-to-33 percent Romney advantage among whites without college degrees. White men who haven't graduated college tilted 37 percent to 33 percent toward Gingrich.

Romney's 20-percentage-point advantage over Gingrich among white female college graduates in those states falls slightly, to 15 points, among less educated white women.

Santorum swept GOP presidential contests in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri last week. There were no exit polls in those races, but the combined surveys for the first five states show Santorum, who had not yet built momentum as a candidate, trailing both Romney and Gingrich badly among white working-class voters.

Ironically, Romney's problem echoes an even more serious weakness that candidate Barack Obama showed in 2008 when trying to reach those same working-class white voters.

Obama lost them badly in the Democratic primaries to rival Hillary Rodham Clinton before losing them by 18 percentage points to GOP candidate Sen. John McCain that November. Obama remedied that by coming close among white college graduates and prevailing overwhelmingly among minorities.

Republicans want to drive their margin among working-class whites as high as possible this year to offset Obama's advantage with minorities. Working-class whites comprise around 4 in 10 voters in recent general elections.

Obama campaign spokesman Ben LeBolt says Romney will be hurt among these voters by his background at Bain, the private equity firm, whose corporate buyouts sometimes eliminated jobs.

"The essential question of the election is, `Who's going to restore economic security for the middle class?'" LeBolt said.

The data is based on surveys conducted for The Associated Press and the television networks by Edison Research as voters arrived at or left randomly selected sites in this year's GOP caucuses and primaries in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Florida and Nevada. The results of the five surveys were combined and each was weighted to reflect its share of the votes cast.

The combined survey involved interviews with 11,376 voters and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 1 percentage point.

Can Trademark Right Still Exist When a Certificate of Incorporation ...

By King & Wood's Trademark Group

Whether revocation of the certificate of incorporation will result in deprivation of the capacity of trademark owners as well as the trademark rights depends on the nature of the trademark owners.

The term "trademark owners" refer to any individuals, legal entities or other organizations that enjoy trademark rights under the law.? Trademark owners include original owners and their successors.? According to Article 9 of the amended PRC Trademark Law, the eligible trademark applicants are defined as enterprises, institutions, social organizations, privately or individually-owned businesses, individual partnerships, foreign individuals and foreign enterprises.

The privately or individually-owned business is a special type of legal person.? In accordance with the General Principles of the Civil Law of the PRC, the privately or individually-owned business takes on unlimited liability and the proprietor as well as its privately or individually-owned business shares the same rights as that of property rights.? So, the proprietor can enjoy the rights of the registered trademark even if the trademark is registered in the name of the privately or individually-owned business.? Under such circumstances, the revocation of the business license of the privately or individually-owned business will not give rise to the cancellation of the registered trademark and the proprietor will have rights to the registered trademark.? The above view has been confirmed in the following case: He Shuxian (a person who owned a privately or individually-owned business) vs. Beijing Wangshunge Food Co., Ltd. and Wangshunge Business Unit (Beijing) Co., Ltd.

However, it is not applicable to enterprises in a broader sense.? In a recent case examined by the Trademark Review and Adjudication Board (TRAB), the revocation of the certificate of incorporation was cited against the application for a trademark.? The TRAB confirmed that the revocation of the certificate of incorporation means a deprivation of the capacity to carry on business operations.? In addition, in accordance with the PRC Company Law and Regulation on Administration of Company Registration, even if the request for cancellation of the company may not have been filed, the capacity is nonetheless void due to the revocation of the certificate of incorporation.? Consequently, neither the capacity nor the rights to the registered trademark can be determined since there is no explicit successor who will receive the applied for mark once it is properly registered.? To ensure the stability of the exclusive rights of the trademark, the TRAB confirmed that a revocation of the certificate of incorporation results in the deprivation of trademark rights in an appeal against the TMO's decision on opposition, Trussardi vs. Wenzhou Kaiji Leatherware Co., Ltd. 12weeks1

This week Baby Harper #3 is about 2.1? long and weighs .49 oz or about the size of a plum.? Andplum he/she has developed reflexes! Baby?s fingers will soon begin to open and close, his toes will curl, his eye muscles will clench, and his mouth will make sucking movements. His intestines, which have grown so fast that they protrude into the umbilical cord, will start to move into his abdominal cavity about now, and his kidneys will begin excreting urine into his bladder.? Meanwhile, nerve cells are multiplying rapidly, and in baby?s brain, synapses are forming furiously. His face looks unquestionably human: His eyes have moved from the sides to the front of his head, and his ears are right where they should be.? And this is what Baby Harper #3 looks like this week?

12weeksgestation

About me & Baby Harper #3 this week?.

Symptoms:?? Well as long as I wear my PsiBands and eat about every hour and a half I am doing a good job of keeping the nausea away.? That sore and swollen issue I was having down below? ya, that become itchy and red too.? So I went to the doctor and turns out I had a yeast infection. Oh joy.

Weight Gain: Lost another pound?. 158.

Cravings:? Lots of fruit and grilled cheese.? Super cheesy grilled cheese.? Oh and I have been munching on honey graham crackers a lot lately.

Food Aversions:? Sweets? I want nothing to do with chocolate, cookies, donuts?. keep that stuff far far away from me.

What made me cry this week:? Wow? I don?t think I cried?..

Medical Stuff:? Last Friday I went to the OB and got to hear the heart beat for the first time.? It was a good strong heart beat and was beating at 159 bpm.? I then had to answer a million questions about my, Dustin, and our family?s medical history for genetic screening.? I then had to turn down all the genetic testing?. there is nothing in our history that causes any concern and I don?t like how many false positives there are with those tests.? Plus I?m only 27? and well it wouldn?t matter what the test would say.? God gives me what I am meant to have and that?s how it?s gonna be? no need to stress.

Thoughts from Dilly:? Well?. Dilly informed me that boys are dumb.? I asked her if she has a brother if he will be dumb.? To which she replied ?No!? Brothers are not dumb, just boys!?? Hmmmm??

Something I am excited about: The end of the first trimester.? YAY!!!!

The Diamond Myth: How Diamonds Became A Girl's Best Friend ...

It?s almost Valentine?s Day, which makes us think of romance, relationships and engagements ? and the sparkly glare of a diamond engagement ring. Yes, diamonds are pretty, precious, and these days, cost a zillion dollars. But it wasn?t always so ? and you can thank a concerted effort on the part of diamond mines, the advertising industry and Hollywood for mercilessly inflating the price of these glittery gems. Here?s how a stone with little intrinsic value became the most important gem in the world.

The diamond myth is more a marketing love story than a true romance. Believe it or not, diamonds only came into popularity in the 20th century (before then, diamond production amounted to a few pounds a year). But in 1870, a huge cache of diamonds was unearthed in South Africa, sending the previously small and exclusive market into a tizzy. With a voluble increase in available diamonds, how could they be priced for their scarcity and rareness? Diamond mine financiers realized that they needed to protect their interests, and the best way to do that was to merge into one mega-diamond corporation. And that?s how De Beers ? which held a monopoly on diamond mining and pricing ? was created.

By combining their holdings into one large monolith, De Beers was able to control and inflate the pricing of diamonds. But that only solved half the problem. De Beers now had a bevy of diamonds but no one to sell them to. So De Beers set about developing an image for the stone, one that portrayed diamonds as ?universally recognized tokens of wealth, power, and romance? ? emphasis on romance. In order to sell diamonds, the myth of the diamond as the ultimate token of affection had to be developed and massaged. As writer Edward Jay Epstein notes, ?Both women and men had to be made to perceive diamonds not as marketable precious stones but as an inseparable part of courtship and married life.? The public had to believe that ?a diamond is forever? ? that it was not only a signifier of commitment, but that it also should never, ever be resold (so that the diamond market wouldn?t be flooded with secondhand diamonds, thereby lessening the demand and value of new market diamonds).

In the 1930s, De Beers heads met with prominent New York advertising agency N.W. Ayer in order to concoct a plan that would convince people of the necessity of a diamonds. Ayer head Gerald M. Lauck hit upon a genius idea: use films as a way to get the public to buy into the importance of diamonds. Lauck urged De Beers to partner with the relatively new film industry to promote diamond story lines, place engagement rings in films and get diamonds into the hands of burgeoning celebrities. It was a full-on assault: diamond plot lines were put into films, fashion designers were enlisted to discuss the dazzle of diamonds on radio shows, and De Beers lobbied for increased exposure to stories of film stars sporting monstrous diamond rings. Diamond marketing stressed that each stone was unique, special and very exclusive.? It was subtle, but very, very effective.

Over the years, the campaign extended its reach. in the 1940s, a series of lectures was promoted in high schools: ?All of these lectures revolve around the diamond engagement ring, and are reaching thousands of girls in their assemblies, classes and informal meetings in our leading educational institutions.? Ayer pushed editorial pitches on ?engaged socialites? with the idea that the cultural desire for a diamond might trickle down from the social elites to the middle classes.

All the advertising, film and television placement and mass psychology worked. After 20 years on the campaign, Ayer reported that the younger generation had successfully been implanted with the idea that diamonds were a de rigeur part of courtship. ?To this new generation a diamond ring is considered a necessity to engagements by virtually everyone,? their report read.? And once the diamond myth took over in the United States, De Beers set about changing global perceptions of diamonds. In the ?60s, they hired a separate advertising company to develop a marketing strategy for Japan, where marriage ceremonies were marked by the slightly less ostentatious act of drinking rice wine. The approach? Market diamond engagement rings as a delightfully modern move toward Westernization ? one that a depressed post-World War II Japan would no doubt clamor for. The strategy paid off; when the campaign began in 1967, only five percent of Japanese women wore engagement rings. By 1978, nearly half of the country?s women wanted diamonds.

In the U.S and abroad, one idea remained constant: De Beers sold the idea that a diamond was an expensive but necessary token of affection ? that giving a woman a diamond ring was synonymous with showing that you loved her. Conversely, a woman who didn?t have an engagement ring ?who wasn?t showered with diamonds throughout her relationship ? was somehow ?less loved? than her diamond-swathed counterparts. The bigger and more expensive the diamond, the more a woman should feel cherished. It?s a lie that started less than a 100 years ago, and it?s a lie the diamond industry has been banking on ever since.

(AP Photo/Yiorgos Karahalis-pool)

(AP) ? Greece failed to finalize terms for a crucial euro130 billion bailout Thursday, but Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos headed to Brussels to meet top EU officials, hoping to rescue the agreement and stave off bankruptcy.

The Athens talks stalled after leaders of the three parties backing Greece's coalition government approved sweeping new austerity measures but failed to agree to creditors' demands to make euro300 million ($398 million) in pension cuts.

Venizelos issued a dramatic plea to the coalition leaders to swiftly resolve their differences, warning that Greece's "survival over the coming years" depends on bailout and a related debt-relief agreement with private creditors.

"It will determine whether the country remains in the eurozone or whether its place in Europe will be endangered," he said.

"There is no room for any other expediency: we must look Greeks in the eye, look at the national interest and the interest of our children."

Major Asian stock markets fell, with sentiment hit by the snag in Greece's debt talks and a rebound in Chinese inflation. Hong Kong's Hang Seng was down 0.2 percent.

Venizelos' meeting with finance ministers from the 16 other nations that use the euro is expected to start at 1700 GMT.

Debt inspectors from the European Union, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund ? known as the troika ? held talks for five hours through the night with Prime Minister Lucas Papademos, Venizelos and Labor Minister Giorgos Koutroumanis. But they failed to resolve the latest sticking point: a demand for substantial cuts in supplementary pensions.

The issue that has threatened to derail the talks concerns cuts of about euro300 million that must be made so Greece can reach its fiscal targets for 2012. At stake is the euro130 billion bailout that will stave off Greece's bankruptcy.

It was not clear whether Papademos would meet with coalition backers ? socialist George Papandreou, conservative Antonis Samaras and George Karatzaferis, leader of the rightist LAOS party.

On Wednesday, the three leaders held talks with Papademos for seven and a half hours and backed a major new austerity program that includes a 22 percent cut in the minimum wage, firings of civil servants, and an end to dozens of job guarantee provisions.

Athens has already accepted a demand to fire up to 15,000 workers in the public sector in 2012.

"At 2 a.m., all I can say, is a line from the Beatles: 'It is a hard day's night,'" Karatzaferis told reporters upon leaving his party's headquarters for home.

Jacob Funk Kirkegaard, research fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, said the lack of progress made during Wednesday's talks highlights the "certain amount of political theater involved here."

"The political leaders in Athens are campaigning," he said. "They need to be seen by the Greek population as fighting until the very last drop of blood. ... They are facing off against the Germans and IMF and the rest of the world."

A disorderly bankruptcy by Greece would likely lead to its exit from the euro common currency, a situation that European officials have insisted is impossible because it would hurt other weak countries like Portugal, Ireland and Italy. Two years of cutbacks already have seen unemployment rise to around 19 percent and poverty to 20 percent in Greece.

Without help, Greece would not have enough money to pay off a big bond payment due on March. 20, triggering a default that risks sending shockwaves throughout financial markets and the global economy.

Greece has been kept solvent since May 2010 by payments from a euro110 billion ($145 billion) international rescue loan package. When it became clear the money would not be enough, a second bailout was decided last October.

Two years of harsh austerity measures have made Greek voters increasingly hostile.

Some 91 percent of Greeks believe the coalition government is taking the country in the "wrong direction," according to a February tracking poll published Wednesday in Greek daily Kathimerini.

Support for the Socialists, who won a landslide election victory in 2009, has dropped to 8 percent, while the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn group has attracted 3 percent support ? enough to achieve representation in parliament, according to Public Issue survey. Conservative New Democracy led with 31 percent, which is not enough to form a government on its own. Sampling data was not available.
