If the best architecture aims at eternity, to paraphrase famed English architect Christopher Wren, then these new hotels are bound to be immortal. The 11 hotels on our list all opened within the last four years, and each is an example of awe-inspiring design in its own right. You can stay in a wave-like skyscraper in Chicago, a stack of cantilevered cubes in Portugal, or a hotel tucked into the wild cliffs of an Australian island. And, even better, it won't cost a fortune to spend a night in these architectural wonders. Seven of the 11 are under $200 a night.

Slideshow: The hotel world's most striking architecture

Bella Sky Comwell, Copenhagen, Denmark

The two structures that make up the Bella Sky each incline at a slightly different angle. Or as the architects sweetly put it, the towers are drawn to each other, "yet seem a little shy." In fact, the creative use of angles is employed both inside the property and out ? geometric angles give the exterior a filigreed look, while inside the hotel there are rooms where there are no 90-degrees at all (there are?more?than?200 different room shapes in the 812-room hotel). The location, in the Copenhagen neighborhood of Orestad five miles from the city center, actually inspired the leaning-tower design. The buildings are so close to the airport that height restrictions dictate that they must not exceed 246 feet. (011-45/3247-3000, bellaskycomwell.dk, from $155 per night.)

Jumeirah at Etihad Towers Hotel, Abu Dhabi

Queensland architecture firm DBI Design won the World's Leading New Hotel Award for 2011 for this stunning $1 billion residential and retail center. The complex is made up of five towers on a beachside stretch on a peninsula in Abu Dhabi. Constructing the buildings that now dominate the modern skyline posed structural challenges. The towers all curve, meaning each floor slab is a different shape. The 382-room Jumeirah hotel takes up 66 stories of one of the towers. (888/645-5697, jumeirah.com, from $192 per night.)

Hotel Consolaci?n, Teruel, Spain

Perched atop a ridge, this collection of 10 freestanding, wood-clad modernist cubes, or "Kube" suites, opened in 2009. Located in the rural mountain town of Teruel (a three-hour drive from both Barcelona and Valencia), the sleek cubes create a beautiful juxtaposition with the groves of olive and almond trees that surround them. Each suite has a sliding glass wall that opens onto a private terrace, and, inside, sparse interiors combine slate, copper-treated pine and metal sheeting. The hotel incorporates some classic elements as well: a converted 14th-century hermitage serves as a communal area for guests. (011-34-978/85-67-55, consolacion.com.es, from $185 per night.)

Southern Ocean Lodge, Kangaroo Island, Australia

Architect Max Pritchard designed this lodge to blend into the dramatic surroundings of Kangaroo Island. Tucked back behind cliffs, the hotel opened in 2008 and consists of 21 suites cascading down a windswept slope, following the natural curve of the land, each with floor-to-ceiling glass walls and sweeping views of the Southern Ocean. Suites were constructed from lightweight materials ? steel screw piles, timber framing, iron cladding ? that could be carried in to create minimal disturbance to nature, and which also could handle the challenge of building on precarious soil conditions (several feet of sand atop solid limestone). Inside are environmentally sound sandblasted limestone floors and recycled spotted-gum walls. The off-the-grid location led to innovations such as sculptural containers for collecting rainwater. (931/924-5253, southernoceanlodge.com.au, from $1,000 per person, per night with a two-night minimum.)?

Marina Bay Sands, Singapore

This trio of 55-story towers opened in 2010 and hold an incredible 2,561 hotel rooms, plus a museum, casino, convention center, waterfront promenade, shops and restaurants. Architect Moshe Safdie has said that his challenge "was to create a vital public place at the district-urban scale-in other words, to address the issue of megascale and invent an urban landscape that would work at the human scale." His way of dealing with that was to design the complex around two central axes to give a sense of orientation. The towers are connected at the top by the cantilevered, two-and-a-half-acre SkyPark, home to gardens, 250 trees, a public observatory and a 492-foot swimming pool ? all perched high in the sky like a fantastical cruise ship forever suspended in midair. (011-65/6688-8868, marinabaysands.com, from $350 per night.)

Yas Viceroy Hotel, Abu Dhabi

This 499-room hotel was the first to be built straddling a Formula 1 racetrack (it opened in 2009 and was renovated in 2011 to become a Viceroy). The structure consists of a pair of 12-story towers joined by a sweeping, 700-foot curvilinear skin of glass and steel ? actually 5,800 pivoting, diamond-shaped glass panels that reflect the sky by day and are illuminated up by an LED system at night. The architects' aim was to reflect artistry and geometries associated with ancient Islamic art and craft traditions, and from a distance the panels create the appearance of a spectacular veil. (888/622-4567, viceroyhotelsandresorts.com ; from about $210 per night.)

Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel, Stockholm

The pi?ce de r?sistance at this 414-room hotel of white polished stone and rough black stone is its attached conference center ? a glass structure with an exterior made up of 13 miles of semi-transparent stainless steel rods. They reflect the sky and water, radically change the skyline, and are what architect Hans Forsmark describes as "a reminiscence of the Nordic Light." The interiors of the hotel, which opened in 2011, follow straight lines and geometric precision. (800/333-3333, radissonblu.com, from $155 per night.)

Axis Viana Hotel, Viana do Castelo, Portugal

The 88-room Axis Viana Hotel was a striking addition to the folkloric village of Viana do Castelo when it opened in 2008. The exterior is made up of reflective aluminum, black glass and green stone, and the cantilevered design changes the shape of the hotel depending upon your vantage point. The contrasting interior consists of white finishes and materials including wood and stone. It's all edged by a shimmering outdoor pool and surrounded by views of the Lima River and Mount St. Luzia. (011-351/258-802-000, axishoteis.com, from $100 per night.)

H?tel Americano, New York

The 10-story Americano sits on the site of a former parking garage in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood. Neighbors were likely pleased with the swap when the hotel opened in 2011. The building looks like a massive metal sculpture ? perfect for the gallery-filled neighborhood ? with floors connected by catwalks and wrapped with stainless-steel mesh. The industrial fa?ade holds 56 rooms plus two restaurants, a lobby caf? and two basement bars; for urban escape, there is a roof deck with a pool, bar and peaceful garden terrace. (212/216-0000, hotel-americano.com, from $295 per night.)

Miura Hotel, Celadn?, Czech Republic

Rising like a geometric spaceship in the Beskydy Mountains is this distinctive hotel made of concrete, sheet metal, violet glass, Corian and stone. Miura opened in 2011 and is divided into three parts, one of which seems to levitate above the ground, plus two side wings containing the 44 rooms. The arrangement means that all of the rooms have views of the surrounding mountains. The striking hotel also has an impressive art collection, with works by Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst and Czech sculptor David ?ern?. Known for his large-scale installations, ?ern?'s works here include an almost 30-foot-tall stainless-steel man pushing against the exterior of the hotel. (011-420/558-761-100, www.miura.cz, from $126 per night.)

Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel, Chicago

Architect Jeanne Gang literally made waves in a city full of iconic skyscrapers with her showstopper building. The 82-story glass structure's exterior has undulating concrete balconies resembling the swirls and ripples of nearby Lake Michigan. Such a unique design brought with it a unique construction challenge ? each floor plate is a different shape, which means a different concrete pour was required for every story. To manage it, the concrete was poured into a specially designed flexible metal edge that was reused over and over again ? an important detail for green architecture. Much of the building is designated for private residences, but the 334-room Radisson Blu Aqua opened on 18 floors in November 2011. (312/565-5258, radissonbluchicago.com, from $175 per night.)?

BlackBerry giving up on the consumer market

Struggling BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd. said Thursday that it will cede most consumer markets after failing to compete with flashier touch-screen phones such as Apple's iPhone and models that run Google's Android software.

Instead, RIM said it will return to its roots and focus on business customers, many of whom prefer BlackBerrys for their security. RIM has had limited success trying to enter consumer markets in recent years, and RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said a turnaround required "substantial change."

"We plan to refocus on the enterprise business and capitalize on our leading position in this segment," Heins said. "We believe that BlackBerry cannot succeed if we tried to be everybody's darling and all things to all people. Therefore, we plan to build on our strength."

Also Thursday, RIM said former co-CEO Jim Balsillie has resigned from its board. David Yach, chief technology officer for software, and Jim Rowan, chief operating officer for global operations, also are leaving in a management shakeup.

The Canadian company long dominated the corporate smartphone market and has sought to expand its appeal to consumers, but it has had trouble with consumers because the phones aren't perceived to be as sexy as its chief competitors.

BlackBerrys are known for their security and reliability as email devices, but they haven't kept pace with iPhones or Android phones when it comes to running third-party applications.

For that reason, BlackBerrys are even losing ground in the business world, as employees demand iPhones or Android devices over BlackBerrys.

Apple sold 37 million iPhones in the last three months of 2011 ? more than what RIM shipped in the past three quarters combined. RIM shipped 11.1 million BlackBerrys in the latest quarter, which ended March 3.

RIM said it was exploring partnerships and other opportunities for its existing consumer business to focus on the corporate customers.

"We can't do everything ourselves, but we can do what we're good at," Heins said.

Asked about a possible sale of the company, Heins said "it is not the main direction we are pursuing right now."

Heins, who took over the company in January, made the remarks during a conference call after RIM announced quarterly results that fell short of Wall Street expectations.

Net loss was $125 million, or 24 cents a share, in the quarter that ended March 3. This compares with $934 million, or $1.78 per share, a year ago.

After excluding one-time items such as writedowns for the declining value of its brand and its PlayBook tablet inventory, adjusted income was 80 cents per share, a penny short of expectations from analysts polled by FactSet.

Revenue fell 25 percent to $4.2 billion from $5.6 billion. Analysts were expecting $4.54 billion.

Fitchburg Financial Planners - Find a Local Financial Planner in ...

Fitchburg financial planners can be an excellent resource as you prepare for your retirement. Whether you have already started a plan for retirement or have yet to think about your long-term savings, working with a Fitchburg financial planner can help you identify your retirement goals and develop a specific road map to reaching them. Massachusetts professional financial planners in Fitchburg can offer advice on everything from setting a realistic nest egg figure to developing steps along the way that will help you realize your desired standard of living. These steps can include debt management, budget analysis, investment planning and even estate planning. Researching Fitchburg financial planners online can help you find the perfect advisor for your needs.

Starting Your Retirement Planning

One of the first steps you can take toward financial planning is assessing your current situation to see how much you can save and where you can improve. Your Fitchburg financial planner can help you create a budget that allows you to put money toward emergency savings while paying off debt. Debt is a big obstacle to saving, since the interest rates you must pay are often higher than what you will likely earn from savings accounts or investments. This is particularly true for credit cards, but debt can take many forms. Your car payment, student loans and other short-term loans are all factors that need to be resolved before you can focus on retirement. Your Fitchburg financial planner can help you arrange a plan that allows you to quickly pay off debt so you can start focusing on other aspects of your saving.

The first step toward your specific retirement plan is a 401k or IRA account. You may already have a 401k plan through your MA employer, but you might not be making the most of it. Your Fitchburg financial planner can help you determine the optimal amount to contribute each month based on your income and your Fitchburg employer's matching contributions, if any. If your MA employer does not offer 401k, you can enroll in an IRA. Your Fitchburg financial planner may even advise you to enroll in both. A Traditional IRA offers the same tax advantages as a 401k. A Roth IRA allows you to contribute already-taxed funds toward your account so you won't face taxation on the total amount when you begin making withdrawals. The disadvantage of a Roth IRA is that you forego the immediate tax benefits when you make contributions. Roth IRA accounts are advantageous if you expect to be in a higher tax bracket at retirement.

Preparing Late for Retirement

Many factors can prevent proper preparation for Massachusetts retirement. Sometimes emergencies or health issues hinder your savings. Sometimes, you simply don't have the savings available to put toward your future. Working with a?financial advisor can help you find a way to squeeze retirement savings from your budget when you are young, but if you haven't worked with financial planners before, you might feel like your options are few. The truth is, Fitchburg residents have many options for catching up on retirement saving, even if they get a late start. You might need to adjust your target retirement age or your desired retirement budget, but a Fitchburg personal finance advisor can help you get back on track toward enjoying your golden years without having to work through them.

One advantage that older investors have is the opportunity to contribute catch-up funds to their 401k and IRA accounts. Investors age 50 and older can contribute up to $1,000 more than the regular maximum allowable amount each year. Fitchburg personal finance planners can give you other resources in Massachusetts that allow you to make the most of your savings. Certified planners can also offer a degree of objectivity. If you are thinking of retiring in the next decade, you might feel tempted to seek high-risk investments that potentially offer a high yield. Fitchburg financial planners can offer objective balance to these urges, recommending low-risk investments that allow you to keep the savings you have while you build steadily toward retirement. Retiring at age 70 with a modest nest egg is more desirable than shooting to retire at 65 and losing your savings in the process.

Fitchburg financial planners can give you the peace of mind that your finances are in the hands of a certified professional, so you can feel confident in your retirement planning decisions. Financial planners in Fitchburg understand that saving for retirement is difficult and that not all MA residents can save the way that the would have liked in their younger years. Working with Massachusetts financial planners is a smart way to get back on track so you can enjoy your golden years, no matter how old you are when you start your retirement planning.

Concordia study looks at rates of risky behaviours for online and offline gamblers

This press release is available in French.

Montreal -- With the click of a mouse or touch of a mobile phone screen in pyjamas or jeans gambling is now at our fingertips 24/7 with Internet play. With this increased access to gambling, are online gamblers more prone to risky behaviours than offline gamblers?

A new study published in Cyberpsychology, Behavior and Social Networking, led by Sylvia Kairouz of Concordia University, has compared people who gamble offline only to people who also gamble online in an effort to answer this question. Her results show that alcohol and cannabis use are in fact associated with online users.

"There has been growing concern with the rise in online gambling and how this affects the health of our public," says Kairouz, professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. "The number of gambling sites around the globe have grown from about 15 in 1995 to 2,358 in 2010 and global Internet gambling revenues increased from $3 billion to $24 billion between 2000 and 2010."

Kairouz's study looked at sociodemographic profiles, game-play patterns and level of addictive behaviours in adults who gamble online and offline. They used data from the 2009 Quebec gambling survey (part of the project Portrait du jeu au Qubec: Prvalence, incidence et trajectoires sur quatre ans, subsidized by the Fonds qubcois de la recherche sur la socit et la culture), which aimed to describe gambling problems, patterns and associated substance use behaviours in the Quebec population. From this survey, a sampling of 8,456 offline-only gamblers and 111 offline/online gamblers was chosen for the research.

In gathering the samples, it was revealed that online gambling appears to still only be a marginal phenomenon in the Quebec population, with only 1.3 per cent reporting having gambled online in the 12 months preceding the survey.

For the study, the gamblers were asked to report their gambling frequency over the past year and to give the number of times they gambled weekly, monthly or yearly. They were also asked to report how much money and time they spent gambling on a typical occasion. Alcohol and cannabis use over the year was also measured.

"Our results show that online gamblers reported being involved in more types of gambling and they spent more money and time playing than those gambling offline only," says Kairouz. "The proportion of frequent and problematic drinkers and cannabis users was also much higher among the Internet players."

According to Kairouz, these findings suggest that online gambling emerges as one more risky behaviour among a panoply of other substance-related risky behaviours exhibited by this small group of individuals.

"We cannot determine, therefore, whether gambling on the Internet creates problems in and of itself, or whether those who already have addictive behaviours are more likely to be enticed to gamble on the Internet," says Kairouz. "We need to conduct more research looking at individual charactersitics, environmental conditions, the object of the addiction (poker, for example) and so on to help us understand whether this group is more at risk for gambling-related problems. The hope would be to ultimately find ways to identify who the people at risk are, why they are at risk and then try to develop preventive measures to reduce the possibility of excessive online gambling."

Cheney older, waited longer than average for heart transplant

CHICAGO (Reuters) - At 71, former Vice President Dick Cheney was older than average for a heart transplant, but doctors said on Sunday that advances in care have made it possible for older patients to still be good transplant candidates.

And not only was he older than the typical patient, but he waited longer than average as well -- 20 months vs six months to a year.

Doctors said Cheney must have been in excellent health to have survived five heart attacks and still been eligible for a heart transplant. Cheney is recovering at a Washington-area hospital after transplant surgery on Saturday.

"He's obviously received superb care," said Dr. James Kirklin, director of cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a recent past president of the International Society of Heart & Lung Transplantation.

"He's an elderly man who likely has taken very, very good care of himself to be in this good shape at age 71. It appears that he has been relatively lucky to have avoided major organ problems that would have precluded a transplant," said Kirklin, who is not treating Cheney.

Hospitals have traditionally set 65 as the upper limit for heart transplant. But older patients increasingly are getting them, and there is no absolute cut-off age.

"Dick Cheney's overall risk would probably be a bit higher than a 60-year-old, but the most important thing would be the function of his organs, which we analyze in great detail."

Dr. Valluvan Jeevanandam, chief of cardio-thoracic surgery at the University of Chicago Medical Center, said his hospital has been doing transplants on increasingly older patients.

"They're not that different. The key is co-morbidities," he said, referring to other chronic conditions that affect the health of the transplant recipient.

Older patients undergo a rigorous evaluation and are screened for cancer, neurological abnormalities, kidney and liver dysfunction and other problems.

Jeevanandam said a 71-old-year-old man has a 10-year survival rate of 60 percent to 65 percent. "I can't predict how Cheney will do," he said.

EXTENDING LIFESPAN

Assuming that Cheney's kidneys and other organ systems were working properly at the time of the transplant and he suffers no issues with organ rejection, the latest procedure could extend the former vice president's life by a decade or so, said Dr. Randall Starling, a specialist in cardiac transplants at the Cleveland Clinic.

"They have to be an excellent candidate without significant risk factors because age itself is a risk factor," Starling said.

In order to qualify for a heart transplant, patients must have end-stage heart failure but be otherwise healthy enough to undergo heart transplant surgery, in which a donor heart is implanted into the patient to replace a heart that has become so diseased it is no longer able to pump enough blood to keep organs working properly.

Cheney has survived five heart attacks -- his first at age 37 -- and his care has run the gambit of interventions, ranging from coronary stents to prop open blocked heart arteries, heart bypass surgery to re-route blood flow around diseased arteries, an implantable heart defibrillator to safeguard against potentially dangerous rhythms.

In July 2010, Cheney underwent a procedure to have an artificial heart pump implanted called a ventricular assist device or VAD that takes over the pumping function of a diseased heart for patients in end-stage heart failure.

The device is often used as a bridge to a heart transplant, offering a way of keeping organ systems in good enough working order for the patient to accept a heart transplant.

Doctors said Cheney could have stayed on the VAD, which has increasingly become a permanent solution for some patients.

Cheney had been on a waiting list for a heart transplant for 20 months, which was a bit longer than the average wait time of six months to a year, according to a study published last year in the journal Circulation.

Some 3,000 Americans are on the waiting list for a heart transplant on any given day, and only about 2,000 donor hearts are available each year, according to the National Heart Lung & Blood Institute.

"He waited quite a long time -- nearly two years on a device. Even though the waiting lists are very long, that would be an extended wait for a heart transplant," Kirklin said.

Patients on VAD devices can experience blood clots and infections, and doctors said it was not clear whether a complication with his VAD device may have suddenly moved Cheney higher on the transplant list.

About 5 million Americans have heart failure, and an estimated 400,000 to 700,000 new cases of heart failure are diagnosed each year, according to the Heart Failure Society of America.

EU slaps sanctions on Assad's wife, relatives

BRUSSELS (AP) ? Officials say that the EU foreign ministers have slapped sanctions on the wife and other close relatives of Syrian President Bashar Assad in a continuing attempt to stop the violent crackdown on opposition.

They said four members of the Assad family and eight government ministers have been targeted in the latest round of sanctions. All three officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a decision will be announced later Friday following the foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels.

Asma Assad, 36, was born in London and has British citizenship, and an EU official said that likely meant she could not be banned from travel to the U.K.

The U.N. estimates that more than 8,000 people have been killed since an uprising began in Syria a year ago.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

BRUSSELS (AP) ? The wife of Syrian President Bashar Assad will be hit with a travel ban and have her assets in the EU frozen, a European Union official said Friday.

A total of four members of the Assad family, along with eight government ministers, will be targeted in the latest round of sanctions aimed at stopping the violent crackdown on members of the Syrian opposition, the official said. He spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a decision that will be taken later Friday by EU foreign ministers meeting in Brussels.

Asma Assad, 36, was born in London and has British citizenship, and the EU official said that likely meant she could not be banned from travel to the U.K.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said it was very important to increase pressure on the Syrian regime.

"Their behavior continues to be murdering and totally unacceptable in the eyes of the world," he said on his way into the meeting.

Austrian Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger said the sanctions should target "the family of Assad ? his wife and his closest relatives. It is necessary."

Last week, Britain's The Guardian newspaper released thousands of emails purportedly from Bashar Assad's private account. They showed him taking advice from Iran on how to handle the uprising, joking about his promises of reform and bypassing U.S. sanctions to shop on iTunes.

The U.N. estimates that more than 8,000 people have been killed since the uprising began a year ago in a cycle of attack and reprisal.

Get Your Money?s Worth: Go For Highly Qualified Business Sales Leads

Article by Sarah Barnes

Chasing after business sales leads is something that all salespeople have to do on a daily basis. Lead generation, though time consuming and can be costly, is an important aspect of the sales process that all business people can do without. It is the only way to find new clients and eventually increase a business? revenue. However, not all sales leads have the potential of becoming good prospects, and ultimately, paying customers. Which is why qualifying business sales leads is so crucial in order to avoid wasting both time and money.

In today?s fast-changing corporate world, highly-qualified B2B sales leads are hard to find. Although there has been a rapid growth in lead buying and list brokerage these days, one cannot deny that only a few lead generation firms and business lists suppliers can really deliver high quality and well-targeted sales leads.

If you are a business owner and scouting for good sales leads, you want to make sure that you are getting your money?s worth. While you can always get business leads cheaply, the quality of these leads cannot be guaranteed. The only time you will discover how bad they are is after you or your sales team have called them and find out they don?t exist, are difficult to contact, you have the wrong person or number, wrong business name, etc. Of course, you wouldn?t get these leads without first paying for them, right? So there goes your hard-earned dollars. They?re cheap, so ?you get? what ?you paid for?.

Buying business leads can be an attractive option, especially if you or your sales people don?t have the time to do it yourselves. But, if you would be shelling out bucks for leads, whether large or small amount, you want to have the chance at, to say the least, getting their phones to ring instead of getting a busy signal or a disconnected message. Ideally, you want to be able to speak with the decision maker who would listen to your proposition and has a genuine interest in your service or product. How do you do this? You can buy leads that have been pre-qualified through appointment setting.

Over the years, lead generation through appointment setting has been proven to work for any vertical. It?s a tried-and-tested marketing approach for generating business leads for various products or services such as accounting/bookkeeping, advertising, cash advance, credit card processing, commercial cleaning, software, tax consulting, and many more.

In appointment setting, professional B2B phone marketers cold-call decision-makers from targeted companies based on the client?s criteria. Telephone representatives call on behalf of the client, establish trust, and set the mood for a sales presentation. If the prospect shows interest and agrees to meet with a sales representative, an appointment (face-to-face, phone, or webinar) is set. This prospect has now been pre-qualified and is forwarded to the client as a sales lead.

The beauty of this method is its capability to quickly identify buying signals. Callers can probe and determine if the prospect:

-Has time for a sales presentation-Is happy with what they have-Has the financial capacity to buy-Is the key decision-maker

In addition, clients can always modify the qualifying questions to get the kind of information they want from prospects. This makes it easier for the sales representative to go about the presentation because issues have been identified earlier and can be addressed accordingly during the presentation proper.

Searching for new leads will always be a part of running a business, and if you have made the decision to buy business sales leads, make sure that you work with a reputable company that can deliver what you paid for.
