What game console release in 2013 is more exciting? | CreateDebate

Well, Play Station usually doesn't disappoint, especially since 3 was far superior to the other counsels.

However, I'm thinking I might get the Valve counsel coming out next year. It's also a computer and I've been thinking of getting a new one. Not to mention how useful Steam will finally be for me when I have a system powerful enough to run whatever I download onto it.

Soho Tea Room | THE FOOD QUEEN ? Vancouver food news and ...

Soho Tea Room is a new Taiwanese/Hong Kong style restaurant that also specializes in bubble tea. Soho Tea Room is the revival of Flo Tea Room on Granville (that location closed earlier this year). The menu is large and takes some time to go through, but there is something for everyone on it.

I recently came here with Dee from Gastrofork for lunch. I was excited to try it because I frequently get bubble tea, but I?m actually quite unfamiliar with Taiwanese food.

Crispy Salt and Pepper Chicken

We split an appetizer of crispy salt and pepper chicken ($6). The chicken came out very hot and freshly fried. The chicken was in perfect bite size pieces and the meat was very moist. The batter was light and crisp and very flavourful from the salt, pepper, and herbs that are in it. There was also a chili type sauce served with the chicken that was perfect for dipping. I would highly recommend trying this popular Taiwanese dish if you come here (You can get entr?e size versions with rice or noodles too).

Taiwanese Style Beef Noodle in Soup

For my meal I ordered the Taiwanese style beef noodle in soup ($8). I love all types of noodle soups, but this was my first experience with Taiwanese beef noodles so I have nothing to compare it to.

The picture doesn?t really do it justice, but this bowl was massive and filled with tons of thick chewy noodles. ?The meat (which I think is beef shank) was tender and had a nice little bit of fat on it.?Aside from the beef and noodles there was baby bok choy and green onions in the soup.

The flavour and depth of the broth is what made the soup amazing for me. The richness of it?reminded me of an Asian version of french onion soup broth. It had such a strong beef flavour with hints of other herbs and spices. I could drink this all day.

Traffic Light

To drink I ordered one of their speciality slush bubble teas called Traffic Light ($5). I ordered pearls in the drink, but they forgot to put them in. I didn?t bother getting them to fix it because by this time I was getting full.

The menu description said the drink was layers of strawberry, mango and kiwi slush. It turned out to be green apple instead of kiwi, which was a bit disappointing because I don?t like green apple. I did enjoy the fruity sweetness of the mango and strawberry layers though. The drink was impressive to look at and it was so big I ended up taking some of it to go.

I thoroughly enjoyed my meal from Soho Tea Room and it was a great introduction to Taiwanese food for me. I would recommend both of the dishes I got and I?m craving them both again now as I write this!

Recommendation:

Yes, for tasty Taiwanese food and cool bubble tea drinks.

NCKU's i-Transport robot wheelchair helps riders reach full height

NCKU's iTransport robot wheelchair helps riders reach loftier heights

Those who have to use a wheelchair are often bound to the elevation of the seat if they want to reach something, which isn't fair when some parts of our world are still built for standing height. Taiwan's National Cheng Kung University is redressing that imbalance with the i-Transport. Its robotic vehicle can raise the driver to an upright level and shift them into a better position to grab objects that wouldn't otherwise be at arm's length. The added independence doesn't stop with the assistance, either, as the i-Transport carries its own blood pressure and breathing monitors to keep checkups to a minimum. NCKU hasn't said how likely it is that we'll see the robot enter mass production, but we hope it forges ahead -- the potential freedom would be worth the effort.

Iraq: New protests break out in Sunni heartland

RAMADI, Iraq (AP) ? Thousands of Iraqi demonstrators massed again in a Sunni-dominated province west of the capital Wednesday, determined to keep up the pressure on a Shiite-led government that many accuse of trying to marginalize them.

It was the third major protest in less than a week in Iraq's largest province of Anbar, once the heart of the deadly Sunni insurgency that erupted after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.

The demonstrations follow the arrest last week of 10 bodyguards assigned to Finance Minister Rafia al-Issawi, who comes from Anbar and is one of the central government's most senior Sunni officials. The case is exacerbating tensions with Iraq's Sunnis, who see the detentions as politically motivated.

Protesters turned out Wednesday near the provincial capital Ramadi, 115 kilometers (70 miles) west of Baghdad. The city and nearby Fallujah were the scenes of some of the deadliest fighting between U.S. troops and Iraqi insurgents.

Demonstrators gathered along a highway linking Baghdad with neighboring Jordan and Syria. They held banners demanding that Sunnis' rights be respected and calling for the release of Sunni prisoners in Iraqi jails. "We warn the government not to draw the country into sectarian conflict," read one. Another declared: "We are not a minority."

Iraq's majority Shiite rose to power following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that ousted Saddam Hussein's Sunni-dominated regime, though the country's minority Sunni Arabs and Kurds do hold some posts within the government.

Many Sunnis see the arrest of the finance minister's guards as the latest in a series of moves by Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki against their sect and other perceived political opponents. Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, one of the country's highest-ranking Sunni politicians, is now living in exile in Turkey after being handed multiple death sentences for allegedly running death squads ? a charge he dismisses as politically motivated.

"This sit-in will remain open-ended until the demonstrators' demands are met, and until the injustice against ends," cleric Hamid al-Issawi told The Associated Press at the protest. He accused al-Maliki's government of trying to create rifts among Sunnis and Shiites.

"These practices are aimed at drawing the country into a sectarian conflict again by creating crisis and targeting prominent national figures," the cleric said.

Al-Maliki has defended the arrests of the finance minister's guards as legal and based on warrants issued by judicial authorities. He also recently warned against a return to sectarian strife in criticizing the responses of prominent Sunni officials to the detentions.

In a recent statement, the prime minister dismissed the rhetoric as political posturing ahead of provincial elections scheduled for April and warned his opponents not to forget the dark days of sectarian fighting "when we used to collect bodies and chopped heads from the streets."

The political tensions are rising at a sensitive time. Iraq's ailing President Jalal Talabani is incapacitated following a serious stroke last week and is being treated in a German hospital. The 79-year-old president, an ethnic Kurd, is widely seen as a unifying figure with the clout to mediate among the country's ethnic and sectarian groups.

Japan's Mori Breaks Lull, Plans $1.2 Billion of New Real Estate ...

After four years of sitting on the sidelines, Japanese billionaire Akira Mori announced his Tokyo-based Mori Trust Co. plans to start buying up to 100 billion yen ($1.2 billion) in properties in Tokyo, New York and London. Mori Trust Co. is Japan's most profitable closely held development firm.
?
The investments would be Mori's company's first major play since 2008 when Japan's real estate boom ended. Mori's announcement comes as local real estate values recover and the yen strengthens.
?
Mori said his company's acquisitions overseas will focus on properties whose values can withstand market downturns; The company may consider working with other investors in big cities such as New York and London.

"Property in a desirable location is good because it tends to be the last to drop in value when the market is bad," Mori said, referring to properties in New York City. "Cheap properties tend to be the first to decline and last to recover."
?
Mori, 76, said he wants to buy Class A office towers and also may focus on developing so-called smart buildings that are energy efficient and have disaster-prevention systems in place.
?
Miki Shoji Co., an office brokerage company, reported the office vacancy rate has dropped for four straight months in Tokyo to 8.7 percent in October, after rising to a record high in June, as excess supply decreased.
?
"Rent decline has slowed," Mori said. "The return from a building is higher than the cost of borrowing. With interest rates being very low, that makes it easy to buy."
?
Mori Trust, which has an occupancy rate of 95 percent for its buildings, plans to raise rents next year, Mori said.
?
The company will also be considering the acquisition of residential developers as it anticipates rising demand for serviced apartments and homes for the elderly, Mori said. A quarter of Japan's 127 million population will be older than 65 in 2014, compared with 14 percent in the U.S., according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
?
Mori is taking advantage of the yen's strength to explore overseas opportunities, Bloomberg reported.?
?
Mori Trust, which has refrained from purchasing to focus on strengthening its finances, has boosted its capital ratio to 26.3 percent as of March from 17.5 percent in March 2008, the year when global financing evaporated as Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. collapsed.
?
"This is the perfect timing to invest," Mori told Bloomberg.? "We have continued to construct new buildings, but for the acquisition of buildings, our plan would be the first since Lehman went bankrupt."
?
The Japanese currency has strengthened 35 percent against the dollar in the past five years and is trading in the range of? 81.90 yen per U.S. dollar.
?
Mori Trust manages 67 buildings in Japan, including the Tokyo Shiodome Building in a commercial district near Tokyo Bay, and operated about 30 hotels as of Oct. 1, according to the company's website.
?
The company made 16 billion yen of profit for the year ended March 31, almost double the net income generated by Mori Building Co., which was run by his older brother, Minoru Mori. Minoru Mori died March 8 from heart failure.
?
Mori is investing his own money beyond the property market.
?
MA Platform Group, a Tokyo-based company set up by Mori, became the largest shareholder this year in closely held Tsingda eEdu Corp., which offers English lessons over the Internet in China.
?
Beijing-based Tsingda eEdu formed a tie with Princeton, New Jersey-based Berlitz Corp. to offer online classes to children and provide overseas study programs for elementary and junior high school students, according to the companies.

Google, AAP Settle Copyright Lawsuit | Poets and Writers

The Association of American Publishers (AAP) and Google recently resolved a seven-year legal standoff, settling their differences over Google?s digitization of copyrighted books and journals as part of the company?s Library Project. The settlement concludes a suit filed on behalf of Simon & Schuster, Penguin USA, John Wiley & Sons, McGraw-Hill, and Pearson Education in which the AAP claimed that Google?s Library Project, which makes digitized titles partially accessible online, was a copyright violation. While the financial details have not been disclosed, under the new agreement publishers have the ability to withdraw copyrighted works that Google has digitized and can also submit works for inclusion in the Google Books database. Google will provide electronic copies of the titles it digitizes to their publishers, who can then use them to create e-books.

In a statement, AAP president and CEO Tom Allen said the association is ?pleased that this settlement addresses the issues that led to the litigation. It shows that digital services can provide innovative means to discover content while still respecting the rights of copyright-holders.?

Google declined to comment on the specifics of the outcome, but in a recent statement, David Drummond, a Google senior vice president and the company?s chief legal officer, said, ?By putting this litigation with the publishers behind us we can stay focused on our core mission and work to increase the number of books available to educate, excite, and entertain our users.?

The Google-AAP settlement had no bearing on the Authors Guild?s copyright lawsuits?one against Google and one against HathiTrust, a collaborative effort by university research libraries and Google to digitize millions of books and journals. Judge Harold Baer? Jr. of the U.S. District Court ruled in favor of HathiTrust in October 2012, deciding that the collaborative project is not a copyright violation; the suit against Google, which was also filed in 2005, is still being argued in the courts.

The Authors Guild is asking that Google pay $750 for each copyrighted work it has digitized as part of the Library Project, which reportedly exceeds 20 million titles in total.

The guild declined a request for comment on its pending suit against Google, but in an October 2012 blog post on its website the organization responded to the judge?s ruling in the
HathiTrust matter, stating it ?disagree[s] with nearly every aspect of [Baer?s] ruling. We?re especially disappointed that the court refused to address the universities? [Orphan Works Project], which defendants have repeatedly promised to revive.? Developed by the University of Michigan Library in partnership with several universities across the country, the Orphan Works Project involves a plan to release out-of-print or otherwise unavailable books?all of which have been digitized by HathiTrust and are still subject to copyright, but whose authors or copyright holders, the project administrators claimed, could not be identified or contacted?to students and faculty within the participating university systems.

?Within two days of filing our lawsuit,? the blog post continues, ?Authors Guild members and staff found that the ?orphans? included books that were still in print, books by living authors, books whose rights had been left to educational and charitable institutions in the United States and abroad, books represented by literary agents, and books by recently deceased authors whose heirs were easily locatable.? In its most recent announcement, the University of Michigan Library?which admitted in 2011 that its original model was flawed?stated that the process of identifying true orphan works is still under way, and that there were no official plans to release titles.?

DNA Dieting: Will DNA Testing Identify the Best Diet for You - Shape ...

Q: Is DNA testing to find the ?perfect? diet for me worth the money?

A: Not at this time. DNA testing is fascinating, but we are really not to the point where you will get enough information to create the ?perfect? diet for you based off your genes.

Currently one of the more popular and affordable genetic testing services is 23andMe. All you need to do is spit in a tube, pop it in the mail in the provided prepaid box, and log onto their site a few weeks later to see your genetic profile.

The 23andMe report gives you information about your DNA, carrier status, and risk for 245 different disease and conditions. At best, the information you will be able to get from test reports from companies like 23andMe will let you know if you are at increased risk for diseases including diabetes, heart disease, or obesity. It can also tell you things such as if you are likely to be lactose intolerant?or have Celiac?s disease. All this information if very interesting and much of it is useful, but we currently can't use it to generate the perfect diet for someone.

For example, if you find out you have the genetic profile such that you shouldn?t have lactose, there?s a simple fix: Stop consuming dairy or take a Lactaid when you do. But if you find that you have the genetic predisposition for heart disease, it?s less clear what you should do. Poll five different experts, and you?ll get at least three different dietary approaches that are the ?best? for treating heart disease. We aren?t to the point with our knowledge about certain diseases and treatments that a DNA test could give you advice for a diet specific for your genes.

I think it also depends on your personality and what you would do with the information. Diet and exercise is far and away the best treatment for diabetes, but despite this many people with diabetes refuse to commit to a regular exercise program or modify their diet in any significant way. Smoking can increase your risk for lung cancer by 13 to 23 times (depending on your gender) regardless of your genetic makeup, but more people start smoking every day.

I am personally fascinated by the level of information an average person can get from spitting into a vial and sending it off in the mail. While this information won?t give you the perfect diet for your body, it will give you lots of insights about your health and potential risk for a myriad of diseases. The price of this testing continues to go down, but whether the information is worth the financial cost is a personal decision.

Japan's next PM Abe must deliver on economy, cope with China

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's hawkish ex-premier Shinzo Abe will get a second chance to run the country after his conservative Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) surged to power in Sunday's election, but must swiftly move to bolster the sagging economy while managing strained ties with China.

Abe, whose party won by a landslide just three years after a crushing defeat, was expected on Monday to meet Natsuo Yamaguchi, the leader of the small New Komeito party, to cement their alliance and confirm economic steps to boost an economy now in its fourth recession since 2000.

The victory by the LDP, which had ruled Japan for most of the past 50 years before it was ousted in 2009, will usher in a government pledged to a tough stance in a territorial row with China, a pro-nuclear energy policy despite the 2011 Fukushima disaster and a potentially risky recipe for hyper-easy monetary policy and big fiscal spending to boost growth.

Projections by TV broadcasters showed that the LDP had won at least 291 seats in the 480-member lower house, while the New Komeito party, took at least 29 seats.

That gives the two parties the two-thirds majority needed to over-rule parliament's upper house in most matters, where they lack a majority and which can block bills. The "super majority" could help to break a policy deadlock that has plagued the world's third biggest economy since 2007.

Markets have already pushed the yen lower and share prices higher in anticipation of an LDP victory and Abe's economic stimulus. The two-thirds "super majority" could boost share prices and weaken the yen further.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) was crushed, forecast to win just about 56 seats - less than a fifth of its showing in 2009, when it swept to power promising to pay more heed to consumers than companies and pry control of policies from bureaucrats.

But voters deemed the pledges honored mostly in the breach and the party was hit by defections before the vote due to Noda's unpopular plan to raise the sales tax to curb public debt already more than twice the size of the economy.

"This was an overwhelming rejection of the DPJ," said Gerry Curtis, a professor at New York's Columbia University.

"Abe was smart to run the campaign saying 'It's the economy, stupid. His hawkish (security) views took second place to fiscal stimulus and getting a dovish Bank of Japan governor and getting the economy going. If he keeps that focus ... he has a chance of improving his standing."

Abe, expected to be voted in by parliament on December 26, will also have to prove he has learned from the mistakes of his first administration, plagued by scandals and charges of incompetence.

Voter distaste for both major parties has spawned a clutch of new parties including the Japan Restoration Party, founded by popular Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto, which took at least 52 seats, according to media projections.

But media estimates showed turnout at around 59 percent, which could match the previous post-war low.

LDP leader Abe, 58, who quit as premier in 2007 citing ill health, has been talking tough in a row with China over uninhabited isles in the East China Sea, although some experts say he may temper his hard line with pragmatism once in office.

The soft-spoken grandson of a prime minister, who will become Japan's seventh premier in six years, Abe also wants to loosen the limits of a 1947 pacifist constitution on the military, so Japan can play a bigger global security role.

The LDP, which promoted atomic energy during its decades-long reign, is expected to be friendly to nuclear utilities, although deep public concerns remain over safety.

Abe has called for "unlimited" monetary easing and big spending on public works to rescue the economy. Such policies, a centerpiece of the LDP's platform for decades, have been criticized by many as wasteful pork-barrel politics.

Many economists say that prescription for "Abenomics" could create temporary growth and enable the government to go ahead with a planned initial sales tax rise in 2014 to help curb a public debt now twice the size of gross domestic product.

But it looks unlikely to cure deeper ills or bring sustainable growth to Japan's ageing society, and risks triggering a market backlash if investors decide Japan has lost control of its finances.

Hack Your Toolbag for First Order Retrievablility

Hack Your Toolbag for First Order RetrievablilityAdam Savage, co-host of Mythbusters, is known for his scissor-lift toolbox where all tools can be easily picked up without moving other tools around. Instructables user The Engineer As Hero shows how this concept can be applied to a standard zippered toolbag by adding cheap and easily-made wood and PVC organizers.

If it takes you more than a few seconds to find the tool you need and you don't have a large collection of hand tools you should consider adopting the First Order Retrievability orgazational philosophy. Basically stated, this means that no tool must be moved out of the way to get to another tool.

In a toolbag, use 6mm plywood to create a solid base to make the bag less floppy. Add in vertical partitions according to the size of your tools and cut down PVC pipe to create slots to hold long handled tools such as screwdrivers and wrenches. You'll of course have to adjust according to the size of your tools and toolbag, but using the overall design philosophy should result in less time spent looking for the same tools again and again.

No. 6 Louisville rallies, downs Memphis 87-78

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) ? Rick Pitino believes an old rival gave his sixth-ranked Cardinals just the kind of early road test they needed.

Luckily for them, Chane Behanan helped make sure Louisville took home the victory.

Behanan scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half, and the Cardinals rallied from 16 points down in the first half to beat Memphis 87-78 on Saturday.

"This was as good a crowd as we've played in in quite some time," Pitino said of a near sellout with 18,392 in FedExForum. "It will rival any Big East crowd, certainly. Great arena, great fans, great crowd. We had to battle all the elements to get a victory and we did."

Louisville (9-1) trailed 25-9 in the first half before pulling out its fourth straight win in this rivalry with a team the Cardinals have played in three conferences. The Big East will be the fourth when Memphis joins in July.

But the Cardinals hadn't played in a week since beating Missouri-Kansas City on Dec. 8, and they seemed to forget all the plays they worked on in practice since then passing the ball to the 6-foot-6 Behanan near the basket. Behanan took only two shots in the first half as Memphis led 35-28 at halftime.

"It doesn't pay to work on it all week," Pitino said. "At halftime, I gave them a piece of my mind saying, 'You've got a great player here but you're ignoring him.' They got the message, and they didn't ignore him."

Russ Smith scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half for Louisville even after hurting his left ankle so badly in the first half he couldn't put any weight on it as he was helped to the bench.

Peyton Siva added 19 points, and Luke Hancock had 11. Behanan isn't talking to the media this semester under team discipline, but Smith said Pitino made sure they found the big sophomore in the final 20 minutes.

"We made an effort to try and come down and give him the rock every time possible," Smith said. "I think we did a pretty good job with that."

Memphis (6-3) had five players foul out, helping Louisville to a huge edge at the free-throw line. The Cardinals were 38 of 46; the Tigers 14 of 20. According to STATS LLC, Seattle was the last team to have five players foul out in regulation in a game against Washington on Jan. 10

"This one stings," said Memphis coach Josh Pastner, now 0-11 against ranked opponents.

Joe Jackson led Memphis with 23 points and eight assists, and Tarik Black added 21 points. Geron Johnson added 12 and D.J. Stephens 10.

These teams have been rivals for decades dating to when both belonged to the Missouri Valley Conference, then the Metro Conference and most recently Conference USA between 1995 and 2005.

They're due to be back in the same league starting in July for at least a season in the Big East, if Louisville doesn't bolt early for the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Memphis called for a "blue-out", and fans responded. They also spent much of the game on their feet, booing or cheering every call and basket. The foul disparity was such that fans stood and cheered the Big East officiating crew derisively when Hancock was called for a foul with more than 6 minutes left.

Jackson said he could feel the difference from the crowd.

"You made a big shot, they erupt," Jackson said.

The Tigers outshot Louisville 51.8 percent (29 of 56) to 42 percent (21 of 50) and outrebounded the Cardinals (34-28). They just couldn't overcome the difference at the free throw line and finish off a big win.

Memphis led 54-44 on a dunk by Johnson with 12:25 left. That's when the Cardinals took control scoring 13 straight points, and Hancock hit a pair of 3s and Behanan added another. Kevin Ware hit a pair of free throws to cap the spurt and put Louisville up 57-54 with 9:58 left.

Pastner said he went to a zone to protect his team with all the foul trouble.

"They were 1 of 8 in the first half from 3, and they hadn't shot well from 3 all year long," Pastner said. "We have to give them credit for making them."

The Tigers could get no closer than five in the final minute as Louisville sealed the win by hitting 10 of 12 at the free throw line down the stretch.

"We had to gut this one out," Smith said. "This wasn't going to be an easy win. We all knew that coming in. We're just really proud of ourselves now that we can go home after a great road victory."

Louisville jumped out 5-1 before Jackson got Memphis going by hitting a 3, and the Tigers wound up hitting 13 of 22 in building a 16-point lead and appearing ready to give their young coach his signature win.

Stephens even stepped out and hit a 3-pointer, which put Memphis up 25-9 with 10:05 left. Memphis kept the Cardinals off balance by switching up defenses from its usual man to man, and the Cardinals wound up shooting 8 of 24 through the first 10 minutes.

The Cardinals took advantage of Memphis turning it over a season-high 24 times, converting those into 29 points.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Actress Amanda Bynes has resolved a misdemeanor hit-and-run case after entering into a civil settlement with other drivers.

Court records show Bynes entered a civil compromise to end the case and her attorney informed a Los Angeles court on Thursday. Bynes was charged with leaving the scene of accidents in April and August without providing the proper information.

Defendants in certain California misdemeanor cases are allowed to enter civil settlements to resolve criminal cases.

City Attorney's spokesman Frank Mateljan (mah-tell-JIN') says prosecutors objected to the dismissal, noting other instances in which Bynes has been cited for driving without a license and her pending driving under the influence case.

Bynes rose to fame starring in Nickelodeon's "All That" and has also starred in several films, including 2010's "Easy A."

Drug to treat opioid addiction places children at risk for accidental exposure

Dec. 14, 2012 ? Buprenorphine is a safe and effective drug for treating opioid addiction. But as the prescribed use of buprenorphine has dramatically increased in recent years, accidental exposure of children to the drug has risen sharply, placing them at risk for serious injury, and in extremely rare cases even death, according to researchers at the Utah Poison Control Center (UPCC), U School of Medicine's Department of Family and Preventive Health, and the Utah Department of Health (UDOH).

In a study published Dec. 13, 2012, by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Utah experts urge physicians to carefully educate their patients about the proper storage and use of buprenorphine, which is available under the names of Suboxone? (a combination with another drug) and Subutex?, about the proper storage and use of the drug. Karen C. Thomas, Pharm.D., Ph.D., certified poison information specialist at the UPCC and adjunct professor of pharmacotherapy, and Christina A. Porucznik, Ph.D., assistant professor of family and preventive medicine, led the study.

"A toddler or child who ingests buprenorphine can become extremely sick," says Thomas. "Therefore, it is critical that patients prescribed this drug understand how dangerous it can be for children and how to properly store it."

The dangers of buprenorphine exposures in children include:

? If a child "mouths" or sucks on the tablet, the absorption increases dramatically compared to if a child immediately swallows a tablet.

? Buprenorphine has the potential to cause delayed and persistent respiratory depression for more than 24 hours following ingestion. Even if the majority of the tablet or film packaging was immediately removed from a child's mouth, the risk for respiratory depression remains.

? In children younger than 6, clinical effects include drowsiness, vomiting, miosis (contraction of the pupil), agitation, tachycardia (abnormally fast heartbeat), and respiratory depression.

As opioid addiction has become an increasing problem in recent years, the number of buprenorphine prescriptions has risen markedly. A UDOH analysis of data from the Utah Controlled Substance Database shows that since 2002 the number of Utah patients prescribed buprenorphine has increased 444-fold while the number of providers prescribing the drug increased 67-fold.

In that same period, the number of accidental exposures to buprenorphine reported to the UPCC increased 13-fold and averaged 36 a year from 2009-2011. The majority of exposures of children younger than 6 required evaluation and treatment at a health care facility. Three people -- one teenager and two adults -- died from accidental exposure to Suboxone?.

In a letter to Utah physicians and other prescribers, UDOH and the UPCC are advising them to educate their patients in the following ways regarding accidental exposures to buprenorphine:

? If a child is exposed to buprenorphine call the Utah Poison Control Center immediately at 1-800-222-1222. Do not wait for symptoms to appear.

? Keep buprenorphine in a locked box, bag, or cabinet for safe storage out of sight and out of reach of children.

? Keep buprenorphine in its original, labeled prescription container with child-resistant closure.

? Do not place buprenorphine tablets or films on counters, sinks, dressers or nightstands for later use.

? Discard used buprenorphine film wrapping immediately after use by folding the package and disposing of it in the trash. Residue from the medication that remains in the packaging can be absorbed when placed in a child's mouth.

? Do not store buprenorphine in pockets, bags, purses, backpacks or other carrying cases.

? Do not leave buprenorphine in the bathroom, car or any publicly accessible space.

Robert Rolfs, M.D., deputy director of UDOH, says educating buprenorphine users about the potential risk to children can prevent serious injuries.

"Buprenorphine has benefits for treating addiction to heroin and prescription opioids, but it also has risks if used or stored improperly," Rolfs says. "It is important to educate the patient on proper use and storage of the medication to protect children from the dangers described in this study."

London buses now accept NFC contactless payments, if you have the magic logo

Transport for London has emailed customers to announce the activation of NFC contactless payments on the city's fleet of 8,500 buses, despite any hiccups on the tube. From today, anyone who swipes a debit, credit, or charge card with the logo above -- or at least the middle part of the logo, with the four bars -- should theoretically be allowed onboard for the same single fare as a traditional Oyster Card user. That's £1.35 instead of the £2.30 cash fare. The logo can also be found on Orange's Quick Tap-enabled Galaxy S III, but the official email makes no explicit mention of any smartphones being compatible. If you have the guts to swipe your GS III over the reader and test it, please let us know if it works (and it's probably better to try it discreetly, in case it doesn't). Customers are also being advised to avoid swiping wallets which contain two potential payment methods -- such as an NFC card and an RFID-based Oyster Card -- so they can control which card gets billed.

Cartoons outperform stock photos 2:1 ? Portent

I curse whoever first wrote ?Have an image at the top of your blog post.?

Ever since then it?s been a barrage of crappy stock photos slapped at the top of every half-assed blog post across the internet.

Take this example. Am I supposed to believe there?s an company in the world that has this many perfectly-coifed, attractive people? This looks like some kind of Children of the Corn spinoff in the making:

Please don't kill me

Please don?t kill me Please don?t kill me Please don?t kill me

If I do a quick reverse image search on Google, I find that this same photo has been used 140+ times, without alteration:

How exactly is this creativity? In what frakked-up universe does this crapola actually add value to content?

Every time I see something like this, my stomach hurts.

Stock photos don?t kill me. People using un-modified, boring stock photos kill me.

I?m not anti-stock photo. I use them all the time. I love them. What I hate is folks reflexively slapping a random photo that?s vaguely business-related at the top of a blog post. It screams ?I don?t give a crap.?

Which is a very long introduction to a fantastic bit of research:

Mark Anderson at Andertoons ? a great artist and a super-sophisticated marketer in his own right ? tested a cartoon versus a stock photo. He had 260 people view a blog post. Half saw the post with one of his cartoons at the top. The other half saw the post with a stock photo.

The results are pretty telling:

people prefer cartoons

But, if you read the whole article, the gap is even larger. In some versions of the test, he had 2:1 or 3:1 result.

Mark?s stuff is brilliant, but there?s a bigger lesson here: People prefer some creativity. If you?re going to add an image to your blog post, your options, best to worst, are:

  • If your post is data-driven, why not really bend reality and present the data?!
  • Original artwork, like a cartoon. It?s not expensive. Mark offers subscription services for $20/month, for example.
  • A stock image, but altered. I love to use animals with speech balloons. It?s corny, but it makes me giggle in a non-too-insane manner, so I keep doing it.
  • Anything but a non-altered stock image.
  • A photo of your dog, Harryhausen, ripping apart a newspaper.
  • A photo of that mole with a hair growing out of it that you have on your arm.
  • A scan of your latest belly-button lint.
  • The latest annoying internet meme.
  • Really, still, not a stock image.
  • ?
  • A stock image.

This is not a sales pitch for Mark?s work, by the way. I get no kickbacks. But his stuff is awfully good. Check it out.

Barnes & Noble Nook HD+ review: a high-def 9-inch tablet at an ...

DNPBarnes & Noble Nook HD review a highdef 9inch tablet at an entrylevel price

A couple of weeks back, we referred to the Nook HD as a "tablet with the heart of a reader." And given Barnes & Noble's roots in brick-and-mortar bookstores, the sentiment makes sense; the company has given the world a product that felt a bit like an LCD reader with some solid tricks up its sleeve. While it shares the same core operating system as the HD, the HD+ brings a bit more to the hardware party -- namely, a high-def, 9-inch HD display. The change shifts some of the product's focus toward multimedia, with a particular emphasis on the recently announced Nook Video service. That, coupled with a $269 price tag, makes for a pretty compelling combination. But is it enough to ensure that Barnes & Noble will have a winner on its hands for the holiday? Find out after the break.

Barnes & Noble Nook HD+ review

Hardware

The Nook Color was a strange-looking thing: long and plasticky, with a prominent carabiner embedded in one corner, serving no purpose other than aesthetic distinction. It was a polarizing choice, heralded by some as a break from the millions of samey slates that have saturated the market, and dismissed by others as just plain. Barnes & Noble clearly felt strongly enough about the design to keep it in place for the follow-up Nook Tablet, making no major aesthetic alterations to the device, save for brightening the body up a shade. With the Nook HD, the company eschewed that distinctive design for something a touch more straightforward but even so, the past strongly informs the design here.

At first glance, the new tablet is a dead ringer for its predecessors: a long rectangular slate, with prominent bezels encasing the display. Along the bottom of the screen, a flush black space houses the familiar lowercase "n" home button that's long been a mainstay on Nook devices. The company went to some lengths to polish the appearance, employing Simple Touch designer and former Apple employee Robert Brunner to rethink the tablet -- good news, given how the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD have been raising the bar for budget tablets.

The most obvious change is the abandonment of the carabiner in favor of a small hole on the bottom-left corner -- sort of a vestigial remnant from past models. The biggest side effect to this redesign is the location of the microSD slot, which now sits on the bottom edge. Using that, you can expand the built-in 16 / 32 gigs by up to 32GB. Just to the left is the proprietary charging port, which is frankly a bit of a bummer as it moves away from the more universal micro-USB of other Nooks in favor of faster charging, according to Barnes & Noble -- though the more ubiquitous choice is certainly sufficient for much of the competition.

The new Nook is also significantly larger than the Tablet (9.5 x 6.4 inches vs. 8.1 x 5.0), a byproduct of expanding the screen from seven to nine inches. All told, the size increase suits the Nook. For one thing, that well-pronounced bezel is more spread out, and doesn't monopolize nearly as much of the device's front face. The increased surface area has also made it possible to shave a few fractions of an inch of thickness, down to 0.45 inch. Naturally, too, the larger size has added a bit of heft to the device, which weighs 18.2 ounces, compared with 14.1 for its predecessor. Still, that's lighter than the 20-ounce Kindle Fire HD 8.9.

It's important to note, of course, that the purpose of the Nook HD+'s unique design isn't just difference for the sake of being different. As with other Nook devices, there's an emphasis on function over form. The rounded corners and large bezels conform more nicely to the hand than the equivalently sized Kindle Fire (the lighter weight definitely helps as well). As with the smaller Nook HD, we wish the company borrowed a page from the Simple Touch by including a concave back where users can rest their weary fingers.

DNPBarnes & Noble Nook HD review a highdef 9inch tablet at an entrylevel price

Instead, Barnes & Noble opted for a simpler approach. The back of the tablet is covered in a nice, textured soft-touch material, with the customary engraved "n" logo in the center. There's a pair of stereo speakers hidden behind a single grille at the bottom of the device's rear. The positioning leaves something to be desired, particularly compared to the latest Kindle Fire, which has dual-grilled speakers flanking the rear cover. The sound, too, is nothing to write home about: it gets reasonably loud, but sounds fairly tinny. You're likely going to spend a lot time using the headphone port located next to the volume buttons atop the device. As with its smaller sibling, Barnes & Noble opted not to include any cameras on the HD+, which amongst other things, helped keep the price down a bit. But again, it's hard to justify totally skipping the feature at this point and time -- for something that's so family-focused, VoIP capabilities seem like a no-brainer.

The killer feature, of course, is the display. With 1,920 x 1,280 resolution and a pixel density of 256 ppi, it edges out the Fire HD 8.9's 1,920 x 1,200, 254-ppi screen, and certainly trumps the Nook HD's 1,440 x 900, 243-ppi panel. It also handily beats the iPad Mini's 1,024 x 768, 163-ppi screen. Not too shabby for a $270 tablet. The company's still got some work to do on its movie offers, but, at least from a display standpoint, this is a compelling and compellingly affordable multimedia option. The 1.5 GHz dual-core OMAP 4470 also offers a bit of a bump from the Nook HD's 1.3GHz version.

Software

DNPBarnes & Noble Nook HD review a highdef 9inch tablet at an entrylevel price

You're getting pretty much the same content experience here as on the Nook HD -- a version of Ice Cream Sandwich that's been skinned beyond recognition. Barnes & Noble calls its UI "paper-like," highlighting a focus on simplicity. Still, it's not nearly as simplistic as the content delivery approach that defines the Kindle Fire experience. B&N has struck a bit more of a balance, maintaining a UI with some of Android's more familiar file structures, while paring down some of the more "unnecessary" elements -- i.e., things that might stand in the way of the product's core competencies (reading books, magazines, etc.)

The home page is a mostly clean slate, where you can easily access your favorite content and apps. Toward the top, there's a carousel of recent content -- not unlike the one that serves as the centerpiece for the Fire experience. Perhaps they just haven't been updated for this particular display, but many of the thumbnails of content that came with our device look fairly low-res. Icons at the top of the thumbnails denote the newest selection and the ones that are located in the cloud. Above this, you'll find a friendly welcome note, the date and time, and icons for WiFi settings and battery life. Clicking "Your Nook Today" brings you to a page that offers up the local weather and content recommendations. Toward the bottom, you get buttons for visiting your library, apps, the web browser, email and the Nook shop. Below this is a field for searching the Nook.

As with its predecessors, the HD+ doesn't offer up access to the whole of Google Play. Barnes & Noble insists that you'll have all the apps you could ever possibly want -- and certainly the company loaded us up with a good spread, including Spotify, Pandora, Hulu Plus, Flipboard and Bad Piggies -- but it's still hard to justify a walled-off app store experience on Android at this point, particularly as the device's relative openness is one of the of the more prominent aspects that sets the tablet apart from the Fire HD.

Content

DNPBarnes & Noble Nook HD review a highdef 9inch tablet at an entrylevel price

As with the rest of the software, the content experience is pretty much what you're getting on the smaller Nook HD. The primary difference here is the display you're using to consume that content. Interestingly when the company first announced the HD+, it mentioned magazines as an instrumental factor in its design to push toward the larger form factor. It seems like an odd thing to put at the center of a device; it's tough to imagine anyone plunking $270-plus for a magazine reader, particularly one that's of no use to you the first several minutes of a plane ride. That said, this truly is a nice product for diving into an image-rich magazine. Images really pop on that 1,920 x 1,280 display, and reading feels quite natural when you're holding the device in portrait mode. Flip to turn the page and you get a nice little curl animation. You can zoom in with a pinch and if you zoom out enough, you'll get a nice layout of the issues in thumbnails. Tap the bottom of a page and you can view it as a scrollable gallery. Flip the device into landscape and you can read it a page spread at a time. It's a really nice way to read magazines.

DNPBarnes & Noble Nook HD review a highdef 9inch tablet at an entrylevel price

Ditto for comics, which offer up a similar experience, along with the "Comic View," allowing you to focus on a few panels at a time. Barnes & Noble's also put some focus on catalogs, if the whole shopping on a website thing isn't your bag. Catalog browsing carries over a number of elements from the magazine UI, coupled with hotspots that bring you to product pages -- seems a bit of a roundabout way to do online shopping, but to each his own, right? Also, unlike the comics and magazines, the L.L.Bean catalog that came preloaded wasn't formatted to the display and suffered from severe letterboxing.

The large display is also a compelling proposal for B&N's excellent interactive children's book offerings, serving big, bright picture books well. This, coupled with the parental control profiles the company introduced this go-around to help parents monitor content, provide two solid arguments for considering the new Nook Tablets as a low-cost, kid-friendly tablet. As far as plain, old-fashioned books go, however, you're not getting much of a bonus from the increased screen size. You've got more real estate for words here, which could certainly be to the benefit of those with poor eyesight, but really, the seven-incher is an ideal size for reading straight text (and, really, if that's your main need, you should look seriously at a devoted e-ink device like the Simple Touch or Kindle Paperwhite).

DNPBarnes & Noble Nook HD review a highdef 9inch tablet at an entrylevel price

The extended display size does, however, make a big difference on the movie front. Coupled with the high-res display, watching movies is a really nice experience on the HD+, and as promised, the company's continued to roll out a slew of content on the Nook Video with a number of high-profile movies and shows (like Brave, 21 Jump Street and Game of Thrones) having been added along with UltraViolet integration since we checked out the smaller version.

Wrap-up

DNPBarnes & Noble Nook HD review a highdef 9inch tablet at an entrylevel price

The Nook HD is a solid 7-inch tablet, and its 9-inch counterpart is a pretty good thing in its own right. The software still leaves a bit to be desired, between a staid UI and a limited app selection. (Then again, that built-in microSD slot means hacking the thing is always an option.) From a hardware perspective, however, it's pretty tough to argue with a 1,920 x 1,280 display on a $269 / $299 device -- particularly one that's so comfortable to hold. Magazine and comics fans will find a lot to like here, and as the company builds out its movie offers, it will become an even more compelling device for multimedia consumption. Parental controls, kid's content and the low price point, meanwhile, offer up a temping proposition for families. All told, the Nook HD+ isn't likely to burn up the holiday charts like the Kindle Fire HD or iPad mini, but we definitely wouldn't mind finding one in our stocking this season.
