Void Century

Different times, different pasts, different technology, different things, all of them meet together, not knowing how, where, or when it happened, because everything is happening at once.

From different generations across the world, different people of different ages and genders come together, nothing in common, these people group together to find a mystery of what had happened in the past, or is it the future?
One thing they know though, someone brought them together, not knowing who. But how? When? and why...?

Finding themselves in Chicago, separate places, the city that had tall buildings and plenty of people, became but ruins and nothingness. One finds newspapers talking about the end of the world. One finds a letter, explaining there was an empty space in the past called the 'Void Century' which contained of three hundred years, where no one knew what had had happened. All the letter said, was they needed to find out what had happened in this past. The rest of these people, scattered, look around what used to be Chicago, for any other people.

They slowly group together, finding these monsters which were obviously mutants, with intellects just as good as humans, they had to hide from and fight. How do they survive this horrifying century? Are there any other humans living? And how do they get out? And who is the culprit who put them there in the first place? Most of all, who created these mutants in the first place and destroyed this city?

Real Housewives of OC Finale ? Cake-Gate and Other Drama

Season 7 of The Real Housewives of Orange County came to a screeching halt this week with a high-drama, two-part finale. The ladies of the OC are well known for their season-ending parties. Last year, we had the infamous drink-tossing incident between Jeana and Tamra. This year, not to be out-done, we had three incidents, starting with ?CakeGate?, when uninvited guest Sarah Winchester came to the party with Alexis. The party was a ?name-change? party thrown by Heather, who, after 15 years, decided to finally take her husband Terry Dubrow?s last name. What followed should make the highlight reels for the Real Housewives series! Alexis and Jim Bellino caused some drama during the Season 7 finale of The Real Housewives of Orange County. Image Credit: PRN / PR Photos. So the party is held at the palatial home of the Dubrows, where all of that plastic surgery money buys you a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean and a home that princes and kings would feel comfortable in. Yet, Heather bought a cake for $550 that was hideous! Basically a three-tiered squarish cake with her new initials on it with a big pink sugar bow on top. Alexis arrives with [...]

Tepid economic growth weighs on US job market

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S. economy is growing too slowly to pull the job market out of a slump, according to the latest data that suggest June has been another weak month for hiring.

Applications for unemployment benefits stayed above a level last week that is generally considered too high to lower the unemployment rate. And the annual growth rate for the U.S. economy in the January-March quarter was unchanged at a tepid 1.9 percent.

Two government reports released Thursday added to the picture of an economy that is faltering for the third straight year after a promising start. Job growth has tumbled, consumers are less confident and Europe's financial crisis has dampened demand for U.S. exports.

Most economists don't see growth accelerating much from the first-quarter pace, although some are hopeful that lower gas prices could help lift consumer spending over the summer.

Growth of around 1.9 percent typically generates roughly 90,000 jobs a month. That's considered too weak to lower the unemployment rate, which was 8.2 percent last month.

Slow improvement in the economy threatens President Barack Obama's re-election hopes. He is likely to face voters with the highest unemployment rate of any president since the Great Depression.

The Federal Reserve last week downgraded its outlook for 2012 growth. The Fed now predicts the economy will grow between 1.9 percent and 2.4 percent this year ? a half a percentage point lower than its forecast in April. And it doesn't see the unemployment rate falling much lower this year.

Hiring hasn't likely improved in June, based on the level of people applying for unemployment benefits.

Weekly applications fell only slightly last week to a seasonally adjusted 386,000, the Labor Department said. Applications have climbed nearly 5 percent in the past two months.

When applications are above 375,000, it generally means that hiring isn't strong enough to rapidly lower the unemployment rate.

Economists are predicting that 100,000 jobs were added in June and the unemployment rate did not change, according to a survey by FactSet. The government will issue the June employment report on July 6.

"Jobless claims are still too high and show that employment growth is slowing and no progress is being made," said Jennifer Lee, an economist at BMO Capital Markets.

Employers added an average of only 73,000 jobs a month in April and May after averaging 226,000 a month in the first three months of the year.

The report on the first quarter's economic growth showed that U.S. corporate profits fell, the first quarterly decline since the final three months of 2008.

U.S. corporations earned less profit overseas, the report said. That's likely a result of Europe's economic woes and slowing growth in countries like China and India. Lower overseas profits could discourage U.S. employers from adding some jobs in the second half of the year.

"With global weakness continuing ... corporate profits are likely to remain under pressure, a development that is unlikely to help the employment outlook," said Jeremy Lawson, an economist at BNP Paribas.

Other recent indicators have painted a mixed picture of the economy.

A closely watched private survey released this week showed consumer confidence fell in June for the fourth straight month. The Conference Board said worries about the job market outweighed lower gas prices and steady improvement in the housing market.

Americans have received little in the way of pay raises this year, with wage growth trailing inflation. That has started to slow their growth in spending. Retails sales have barely grown in the past two months.

Less growth in consumer spending has also hurt U.S. manufacturing activity, a leading economic driver since the recession ended. Factories produced less in May than April, the Federal Reserve said this month. Automakers cut back on output for the first time in six months.

There have been hopeful signs.

Gas prices have plummeted since peaking in April near $4 per gallon. The average national price for a gallon of gas was $3.37 on Thursday, according to auto club AAA, Wright Express and the Oil Price Information Service.

U.S. factories received more orders for long-lasting manufactured goods in May, while a key measure of business investment plans rose.

And Americans are starting to gain more confidence in the long-suffering housing market. Home sales are up from last year and signed contracts to buy homes matched a two-year high in May.

One reason home sales are increasing is mortgage rates have fallen to the lowest levels on record. This week, the average rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage stayed at 3.66 percent. That's unchanged from last week and the lowest since long-term mortgages began in the 1950s.

Home prices have started to rise in most cities. And homebuilders are planning to break ground on more projects in the next 12 months.

OLED Lego train station emerges from Adafruit and Arduino gear, minifigs to get home on time

Who knew Lego characters had to be somewhere in a hurry? Adafruit did, as it just whipped up a minifig-sized train schedule. The invention mates one of Adafruit's own 1-inch OLED boards with an Arduino Uno controlling the schedule behind the scenes. It looks to be a straightforward project for the DIY types, although the display is currently all show: the schedule doesn't (yet) pair up with the train tracks to automatically let your minifigs know if their trip to the pirate spaceship castle has been delayed by ghosts. You can check the source link for the full instructions. Duplo builders, alas, are kept out of the loop.

What?s Behind Canada?s Entry to the Trans-Pacific Partnership Talks?

Image

Last week, U.S. President Barack Obama formally extended an invitation to Canada to join the Trans Pacific Partnership negotiations, a proposed trade deal that includes the U.S., Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam (Mexico was also added last week). Supporters have lauded the TPP as potentially the world?s most important trade pact and the Canadian government spent months crossing the globe to lobby for an invitation.

Yet dig beneath the heady promises and the benefits for Canada are hard to identify. The price of admission was very steep ? Canada appears to have agreed to conditions that grant it second-tier status ? and the economic benefits from improved access to TPP economies are likely to be relatively minor since we already have free-trade agreements with four of the ten participants.

Given those conditions, why aggressively pursue entry into the negotiations? The reason stems less from gaining barrier-free access to a handful of relatively small economies and far more about using the TPP as a backdoor mechanism to promote regulatory changes in Canada.

Given Canada?s late entry into the TPP process, the U.S. was able to extract two onerous conditions that Prime Minister Stephen Harper downplayed as the ?accession process.? First, Canada will not be able to reopen any chapters where agreement has already been reached among the current nine TPP partners. This means Canada has already agreed to be bound by TPP terms without having had any input. Since the TPP remains secret, the government can?t even tell us what has been agreed upon.

Second, Canada has second-tier status in the negotiations as the U.S. has stipulated that Canada will not have ?veto authority? over any chapter. This means that should the other nine countries agree on terms, Canada would be required to accept them.

This condition could be used to stop Canada from joining forces with another country on a tough issue during the late stages of the negotiation. For example, Canada and New Zealand both have copyright terms that last for the life of the author plus an additional 50 years. The U.S. has proposed that the TPP mandate a term of life plus 70 years. While Canada and New Zealand might be able to jointly block the extension, the U.S. could pressure New Zealand to cave on the issue and effectively force Canada to accept the change.

These tough entry conditions might be worth it if Canada stood to benefit significantly from new market access. However, Canada already has free trade agreements with the U.S., Mexico, Chile, and Peru. That leaves just six countries, which currently represent less than one per cent of Canadian exports, as the net gain. In fact, there has been recent speculation that Chile is prepared to drop out of the negotiations precisely because it already has a free trade agreement with the U.S. and sees little upside in making major concessions in order to gain better access to the remaining TPP markets.

With Canada already surrendering negotiation leverage and few important markets at stake, our participation is less about other TPP countries and much more about us. Business groups such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce applauded Canada?s entry into the TPP, expressing the hope that it would force further changes to Canadian intellectual property laws less than 24 hours after Bill C-11 passed in the House of Commons.

For the Canadian government, the TPP offers cover for major reforms to supply management, the combination of tariffs, quotas and price supports that increase costs for dairy, eggs, chicken, turkey and broiler hatching eggs. The system has been politically untouchable for decades, but using a backdoor approach of mandating change through trade agreement might provide the mechanism to garner the necessary popular support.

While backers maintain that the TPP will open up new markets to Canadian companies, the reality is that the agreement?s biggest impact is likely to come from major domestic legislative reforms that would otherwise face considerable opposition and serious political risk.

The planer was attached to the stand, but I barely have enough room to pass gas, so it{the stand} will either be disassembled & stored or passed onto someone who can use it. He had no idea what the clamps were used for, but he picked up both the 32"36"? & the 50" for $5.00..after I explained the clamp uses we decided he should keep one for himself{besides, I told him that I knew where he lived if I needed the larger one }...He wouldn't say what he paid for the planer, he just smiled and said he was still "way ahead"...great to have good neighbors, or good to have great neighbors, either/or, I'm blessed to have quite a few on our little street!

I don't know much about this planer except it works fine, it seems. Though I will be making it a permanent home of some sort with in-feed & out-feed tables, currently set-up, it leaves about 2-3 inches of snipe, but hopefully some fine tuning and the possibility of some of you having a tip or two to share will square away most of the bugs I might encounter.

Anyways...sorry for rambling, I'm still giddy over this....hope you all have a great weekend, and be sure to at least wave hi to your neighbors...you just never know...

Brand new bonding skills make boron more like carbon

BORON has been hiding secret skills but its cover is finally blown.

In a tightly sealed flask in a German lab sits an emerald-green crystal that is the first stable compound with a triple chemical bond between two boron atoms. Such bonds were previously reserved for an elite club of atoms, including carbon, which sits next to boron in the periodic table.

In another first, boron atoms have linked up with each other in chains. Carbon's tendency to do so is the basis for organic chemistry, making possible DNA, proteins, alcohols and plastics. Synthetic, or alien, life based on boron remains far-fetched - boron still can't link to other life-related compounds, for one thing. But the feats pave the way for boron-based polymers, and other structures previously undreamed of. "Certainly this will go into the textbooks," says Holger Braunschweig of the University of W?rzburg in Germany.

Until now largely obscure, boron occupies a special spot in the periodic table. On one side are metals like beryllium, which give away their outermost electrons to form ionic bonds. On the other side are the non-metals carbon and nitrogen, which prefer sharing electrons in covalent bonds.

A single covalent bond is two electrons shared between two atoms. Carbon, with four outer electrons, and nitrogen with five, form triple covalent bonds consisting of six shared electrons, or three pairs. Boron has three outer electrons, so in principle should be capable of this too, but it has remained aloof. In 2002, Mingfei Zhou and colleagues at Fudan University in Shanghai, China, managed to make a boron triple bond - but only at 8 degrees above absolute zero.

Boron can hold up to eight outer electrons: a pair in each of four slots. In atomic boron, one of these slots is completely empty and the other three are half-full, with one electron apiece. To make triple-bonded boron that could survive at room temperature, Braunschweig and his colleagues filled all four slots. They filled up the empty slot by bonding each boron atom to a molecule that donated two electrons. Each boron atom then completed the filling of its slots by pairing up with another boron atom and pooling its original three electrons (see diagram). In the resulting compound, each boron atom has a full suite of eight outer electrons, making it stable (Science, DOI: 10.1126/science.1221138).

Braunschweig and his team have already begun investigating the reactivity of the novel compound. "It turns out that it shows a rich chemistry," he says.

Triple-bonding is not the only way the researchers got boron to mimic its superstar neighbour, carbon, though. They also coaxed boron atoms into forming a chain. Previous attempts to do this with boron failed and resulted in messy clusters. "It is extremely difficult to form chains of boron atoms," says Braunschweig. The secret was to attach the boron atoms to an iron scaffold, which allowed up to four to form a chain (Nature Chemistry, DOI: 10.1038/nchem.1379).

Next, Braunschweig and his team hope to free this boron chain from its scaffold and increase the chain length to form the boron equivalent of polyethylene, a common plastic. "The material, if it could be made, would have completely different physical behaviour from an ordinary carbon chain," Braunschweig says.

A world of previously forbidden chemistry beckons. "They did not simply find a new flower or a new plant," says Gernot Frenking of the University of Marburg in Germany, who was not involved in the work. "They opened the door to a whole new garden."

Sony pumps $994 million into building stacked CMOS that lets smartphones record HDR Video

Sony increases production on its stacked CMOS sensor, plans to make us all cameraphone Kubricks

Sony is pumping 80 billion yen ($994 million) into its Nagasaki Technology Center, the home of its innovative stacked CMOS. Unlike traditional versions, the image sensor and circuit are mounted on top of one another, rather than side-by-side across a supporting substrate. The tweak means it shaves valuable millimeters from its body while producing far clearer images and, best of all, HDR Video. With the investment (and some Government subsidy) the company aims to pump out 60,000 wafers per month by the end of 2013. Given that both Samsung and Apple both use Sony's imaging equipment in their flagships, we can hope that the 13-megapixel units find their way into the next generation of handsets.

Senate bill brings some big changes to farm policy

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Briefly putting election-year politics aside, the Senate on Thursday moved toward strong approval of legislation assuring that farmers hit by bad times will be protected and that millions of others hurt by the bad economy won't go hungry.

The Senate is expected to show bipartisan support for the $500 billion bill that sets farm safety net and conservation policies and funds the food stamp program over the next five years. The vote will come after lawmakers finish the final eight of more than 70 amendments the Senate is considering as part of the 1,000-page bill.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky opened Thursday's session by praising the Senate's recent successes in getting bills passed. McConnell said they were "getting back to operating the way the Senate traditionally has."

The bill goes next to the House, where there's less enthusiasm for it among conservative Republicans. The House Agriculture Committee has delayed a vote on the farm bill until July 11, and it's uncertain when the full House will vote. The 2008 farm bill expires at the end of September.

One issue the Senate left unresolved that the House will have to consider is a division between northern and southern farmers over safety nets.

The Senate bill makes major changes in past practices, eliminating direct payments to farmers regardless of whether they plant a crop and replacing the payments with greater emphasis on crop insurance and a new revenue protection plan that compensates farmers for minor losses until crop insurance kicks in.

Northern and Midwestern corn and soybean farmers support the change, but southern rice and peanut farmers, who have relied more heavily on direct payments and a target price subsidy that would also be eliminated, are looking to the House to keep at least some parts of the old system.

Senate supporters say the changes to the subsidy programs will save $15 billion over the next 10 years. The entire bill, with savings to conservation programs and food stamps, formally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, would save the treasury $23 billion over that period.

The Senate bill also limits subsidy payments to those with adjusted gross income of less than $750,000, half the current ceiling, and caps payments at $50,000 for an individual or $100,000 for a couple. An amendment approved Wednesday would also reduce by 15 percentage points the taxpayer share of crop insurance premiums for those with incomes of more than $750,000. The government now pays an average 62 percent of crop insurance premiums.

The bill also ends payments to "farm managers," sometimes wealthy people who may have an interest in a farm but don't live on the property or actively engage in farming.

Food stamps continue to command the great majority of farm bill dollars. Spurred by the bad economy, there are now 46 million people getting food stamps, at a cost of about $80 billion a year. That's 80 percent of the entire farm bill budget.

The farm bill does make an effort to end abuse or misuse of SNAP benefits. Lottery winners and college students being supported by their non-low-income families no longer qualify. The bill cracks down on benefit trafficking, prevents liquor and tobacco stores from accepting food stamps and closes a loophole in which some states give as little as $1 a year in heating assistance to people, even when they don't have heating bills, to increase their food stamp benefits. That saves about $4 billion over 10 years, a tiny part of the $770 billion the program is expected to spend, and senators rejected amendments that would have made deeper cuts in the program.

The measure also differs from past farm bills in paying more attention to what are called specialty crops, mainly fruits and vegetables. It expands block grants to states to support research and promotion of specialty crops, assists organic farmers and expands support for farmers' markets and programs that help get healthy foods to low-income areas.

Still, there are numerous groups that say the bill doesn't go far enough in casting off old farm bill habits. The conservative Club for Growth said it still asserts too much government control in the private sector. The public interest advocacy group U.S. PIRG said the bill "will continue the current practice of disproportionately subsidizing the largest agribusinesses, who are already profitable and don't need taxpayer handouts."

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., long a watchdog for special interest projects included in highway and farm bills, noted that the bill doesn't change the program that protects sugar growers from foreign competition and creates a new $3 billion program for cotton growers. He said there is also money in the bill to improve the U.S. sheep industry, study the health benefits of peas and lentils and plant trees in urban parks.
