Boat Insurance - Removing The Stress

Motor boating or sailing are sports that we who love being on the water enjoy. I expect that you, as a sailor like me, would prefer to be out sailing and boating, or in the darker months planning your summer venues and passages, rather than trying to fathom the complexities of marine boat insurance.

Nevertheless, a different perspective quickly crops up for those thousands of people who are involved in boating accidents every year. Although most states in the U.S do not require the insurance of a boat, you will find that marine insurance is often required when your boat is docked or has a lien. And this is no accident (geddit?) as the governing bodies know that insurance protects your property, you and your crew and any third parties who may be involved in a marine incident.

So, just like any property, your boat needs to be protected physically and financially. Getting good boat insurance is therefore good sense, regardless of the law or local rules. As a sailor you are aware of the skills and the challenge presented by boating; after all that's one of the main reasons we do it. But sometimes things happen quickly or unexpectedly and that is where having the right boat insurance comes into force.

Accidents happen, thousands of them every year - and we hope you are never involved in one - but dealing with the aftermath can be very time consuming and expensive. With the right marine insurance you know that knowledgeable people are there to help you sort out the ramifications and provide financial restitution. You use your boating skills so that you should never need to make that claim call; but if you do then you will know, because of the effort you put into selecting the policy, that you will get the help you need.

When most, if not all, of those involved in the accident are covered by insurance, the result is beneficial for everybody. The result is a reduced time to get repairs underway and the costs to you of the incident are dramatically reduced.

You may think that smaller boats, like dinghies, jet skis and canoes do not need insurance. Wrong. However, accidents are not picky - they can occur to anybody, no matter how careful that person is. People slip, boats bang into one another, bits break, winds and water flows are variable and sometime have an irresistible force. As such, getting small boat insurance is as wise as getting insurance for any larger yacht or motor cruiser. Additionally, insurance is always mandatory for racing dinghies.

The danger is not over after you have packed up your boat and headed home - even in a dock accidents can occur caused by others - but you may be left to pick up the pieces.

Don't leave it too late - it is game over once the accident has happened. Do the wise thing, and make sure your insurance cover gives you the peace of mind that you need.

To Your Boating Enjoyment!
